Gareth Southgate questions asked after England suffer dismal Hungary loss

Gareth Southgate is facing serious questions over his England future following a dismal run of form that culminated in a shock 4-0 defeat by Hungary on Tuesday evening.

England sit rock bottom of their Nations League group with just two points to their name, having failed to score from open play in their opening four matches. The latest defeat is likely to cause the biggest shockwaves, with Hungary running riot against Southgate's side.

The Three Lions' form is a far cry from the results that saw Southgate lead England to a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final last year. Yet, even then, the England boss faced some criticism over a pragmatic style of play that favoured results over style - and these latest performances have only served to strengthen the belief from critics that the country needs a new boss.

Whilst Southgate has come the closest to ending England's near-60-year major trophy drought, the calamitous nature of the defeat by Hungary will no doubt pose questions over how much of a threat the Three Lions can be in Qatar for this year's World Cup.
