Darwin Nunez planning Liverpool talks with Luis Suarez after Anfield transfer

Darwin Nunez is planning to speak to Luis Suarez following his £85million transfer from Benfica.

The Uruguay international, 22, has signed a six-year deal at Anfield after a prolific season in Portugal. Nunez scored 34 times and provided four assists in 41 appearances for Benfica, including two goals against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Suarez, 35, is an icon on Merseyside after finding the back of the net 82 times for the Reds between January 2011 and July 2014. He almost won the Premier League title in 2013-14 - missing out on the final day to Manchester City - and won the EFL Cup in 2011-12.

Nunez and Suarez are colleagues at international level and Liverpool's new signing plans to tap into his compatriot's knowledge to help him become a success at Anfield. "No, not yet," Darwin told Liverpool's website when asked if he's been in touch with Suarez.

"I've not had a chance to be in touch with him just yet. But I'm sure when everything comes out on social media, I'll give him a call or I'll send him a photo that I've taken where he's there in the background in a picture.

"I'll send that to him and we'll have a bit of a chat and I'll ask him lots of questions so he can offer his support and help because he's a real reference to me because he's a Uruguayan footballer who made history at Liverpool. But, for sure, I'll get the opportunity soon to call him and have a chat with him."

Nunez is expected to become Uruguay's main forward after the World Cup in Qatar, with Suarez and Edinson Cavani, 35, coming towards the end of their international careers. Liverpool's new signing has scored twice in 11 senior appearances for Uruguay.

Nunez started his professional career at Penarol in his homeland before joining Spanish second tier side Almeria in the summer of 2019. He only spent one season in Spain but was successful, scoring 16 goals in 30 league appearances to catch Benfica's attention.

"When I arrived at the training ground, I was really surprised to see the set-up and the structure and all the trophies here," said Nunez on signing for Liverpool.

"You can then imagine yourself winning more trophies and then later on when you come here again and see the trophies on display, you can say, 'Look, I was a part of that, I was there at that time, winning trophies. That's one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool - to win trophies and titles."

Discussing Nunez, Jurgen Klopp added: "That's why it's so exciting. His age, his desire, his hunger to be even better than he currently is and his belief in our project and what we are looking to do as a club. He thinks we suit him and we believe he is the right fit for us - so let's do it."

The Liverpool manager went on to say: "He can set a tempo, he brings energy, he can threaten space from central and wide areas. He is aggressive and dynamic with his movement. He plays without fear, he's powerful, I know he will excite our supporters."
