White overtakes Kane with landmark goal and edges closer to Rooney's England record

In the World Cup qualifying match in Skopje, the Manchester City Women striker moved ahead of Harry Kane in England's scoring charts and closed in on Wayne Rooney's all-time record.

White, 32, scored the fourth of five first half goals for England, and in doing so cemented her name in the nation's record books.

The other goals came from Beth Mead who found the net four times, while Ella Toone scored a hat-trick and Georgia Stanway got two.

White's landmark goal, a trademark header, moved her one clear of Sir Bobby Charlton and Kane and to within three of all-time England record goalscorer Rooney.

The Manchester United legend managed of 53 goals in 120 Three Lions appearances, with White now sat on 50 goals in 105 Lioness outings.

It was another faultless evening for England Women, who have now scored 63 times in just seven qualifying matches - while conceding none.

If Austria drop points in their next qualifying game against Latvia, England could officially book their ticket to next year's tournament with a win over Northern Ireland in their next match.

White will hope to extend her record on Tuesday night, and spoke about her pride of reaching the big 50 after the win against North Macedonia.

"It's a massive privilege," White told ITV Sport.

"It's a dream for me to play for England and for me it's about any way I can contribute to the team.

"Obviously I'm delighted to get on the scoresheet but for me it's all about the team hopefully qualifying for the World Cup.

"But it's an incredible feeling to be amongst those amazing players. It's really lovely."
