With 10 points separating them from the relegation play-off place and only six games to go, Fürth's fate appears to be sealed; like in 2012/13, they will be heading back to the second tier after a solitary season in the Bundesliga. Stefan Leitl's men have shown they still have a bit of fight in them in recent weeks, holding Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt to goalless draws, but the fact remains that they have only won three games all season. Captain Branimir Hrgota struck twice when they last claimed three points, in mid-February, and the eight-goal Swede remains their biggest threat alongside Germany U21 striker Jamie Leweling, with five. Right-back Marco Meyerhöfer underwent surgery on the weekend after sustaining a serious ankle injury against Frankfurt and will miss the rest of the season, while midfield duo Paul Seguin and Jeremy Dudziak are still unavailable. Sebastian Griesbeck could make the matchday squad after illness.
Gladbach may not be in the same dire straits as their hosts, but this has been a disappointing campaign by their lofty standards. The Foals qualified for the UEFA Champions League two seasons ago, but they currently sit 12th, and closer to the bottom three than the top six. Things have been looking up in recent weeks, though, with wins over Hertha Berlin and Bochum, although they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mainz last time out. Ramy Bensebaini picked up a knock in that game but should be fine to start, while top scorer Jonas Hofmann and Marcus Thuram are set for a return to action after muscular injuries. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer has been on fine form over the past month, only conceding one goal in three outings, and with Germany international Ginter marshalling the Gladbach defence, goal-shy Fürth - who have the division's second-weakest attack - are in for a tough assignment.
Match stats
Hrgota scored 19 goals in 88 appearances for Gladbach between summer 2012 and 2016. His record for Fürth is 35 goals in 95 games, including a team-leading eight strikes in this season's Bundesliga.
Julian Green has struck once from open play this season - in the DFB Cup first round - and is yet to score in 23 Bundesliga appearances.
Fürth's three wins so far this Bundesliga season have been at home. In 2012/13, their four victories over the campaign fell on the road.
Joe Scally could make his 25th Bundesliga appearance. He was 12 years old when US countryman Green made his competitive debut for Bayern Munich in November 2013.
Sommer has repelled a league-high 116 shots on his goal.
Gladbach have not strung together a four-match unbeaten league run since March-April 2021.
