Rashford apologises to Man Utd fans after being left lost for words by Liverpool

Marcus Rashford has issued a delayed apology to Manchester United fans following their humbling defeat by Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils went down 5-0 to their fiercest rivals at Old Trafford, with the result heaping pressure on United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Quickfire goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota had put Liverpool in control of the match amid some poor United defending, before a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah either side of half-time asserted Liverpool's dominance.

To make matters worse for United, Paul Pogba was sent off on the hour mark for a lunge on goalscorer Keita.

Forward Rashford admitted he had struggled to find the words following the loss.

"I can't lie you haven't heard from me on here because as a United fan I didn't really know what to say after Sunday," he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday evening.

"I was embarrassed. I am embarrassed. Our fans are everything and you didn't deserve that.

"We're working hard to try and fix this. We have to redeem ourselves."

Several United players took to social media in the immediate aftermath of the defeat, with Cristiano Ronaldo writing on Instagram : "Sometimes the result is not the one we fight for. Sometimes the score is not the one we want.

"And this is on us, only on us, because there's no one else to blame.

"Our fans were, once again, amazing in their constant support. They deserve better than this, much better, and it's up to us to deliver. The time is now!"

Solskjaer is expected to be in charge for this Saturday's trip to Tottenham, although the pressure has ramped up on the United boss following the humbling defeat.

After the defeat, he said: "Next week it is Tottenham away, then Atalanta in the Champions League, the next team who visit us is Man City and we have to look forward.

"We have to sort the frame of minds out and make sure we go into the next training session and the next game in the right frame of mind," he said.

" Manchester United have had tough times, difficult times before and they have always bounced back and taken on challenges.

"Last season we were second and this season we have started badly. You have to get through that one and then start building performances, start building results, start with clean sheets and see where that take us at the end of the season."
