Manchester City's four-year Carabao Cup dominance finally ended by West Ham

Manchester City have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup for the first time in five years after losing on penalties to West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side were held to a 0-0 draw before the tie was forced into a penalty shoot-out.

Phil Foden was the unfortunate City star to miss his spot-kick, firing wide of Alphonse Areola's goal from 12-yards.

From a West Ham perspective, Mark Noble, Jarrod Bowen, Craig Dawson and Aaron Cresswell all scored in the shoot-out- before the pressure fell to Said Benrahma.

The Algerian converted the crucial penalty for the hosts - lashing his effort beyond Zack Steffen, who did get a hand to it.

The defeat means Guardiola's recent dominance over the competition has come to an end after a heroic effort from David Moyes's side.

Following the game, Guardiola gave credit to City's opponents on the night, explaining: "An incredible run has finished. We finished in a good way. We played in a really good way, creating chances against a team who defended deep.

"On penalties, they were better. Congratulations to West Ham. Next year we will be back."

Guardiola can not hide behind any kind of 'weakened' side excuse, the City boss naming both Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne in the starting eleven.

Though he didn't actually save any of the spot-kicks he faced, West Ham have Areola in large part to thank for their progression into the last eight.

The Frenchman made four key saves over the course of the 90 minutes to keep City at bay and ensure the tie went to a shootout.

The beginning of the shootout saw Mark Noble lay some spot-kick demons to rest, after his infamous miss against City's local rivals Man Utd earlier this season.

The Hammers skipper missed a last-gasp penalty against United in the league with what was his first kick of the afternoon, though he dispatched tonight's with ease.

Man City's league record under Guardiola now reads 27 games, four trophies, 20 wins, four penalty shoot-out wins, two defeats, one shootout defeat.

Their elimination is unwelcome news to the string of young talent waiting in the wings City often use this tournament to deploy.

Guardiola did single one out for praise after the full-time whistle, claiming: "Cole Palmer was excellent, creating chances in the first-half. We played a tough side and when you arrive at the penalties, anything can happen."

West Ham are one of five London sides that remain in the Carabao Cup, alongside Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Brentford.
