Preview: Hibernian vs. St Mirren - prediction, team news, lineups

sportsmole.co.uk, 25 September 2023, 10:22
Hibernian will host St Mirren on Wednesday night in the quarter-final of the Scottish League Cup, with each club looking to book a place in the final four of the competition.

The visitors head into this game on the back of a 10-game undefeated streak while the Hibees are also performing well at the moment following three matches without a loss.

Match preview

Hibernian were able to defeat Raith Rovers in the previous round of the competition due to goals from Elie Youan and Dylan Vente helping to secure a 2-1 win, and the team will now aim to continue progressing.

The Hibees did not make it past the group stage last season, therefore the team have already improved upon their efforts, although they were a seeded team this season.

Nick Montgomery's team head into this match on the back of three games without a defeat, stringing together a positive run with two victories a draw.

Last weekend saw Hibernian comfortably beat St Johnstone by two goals to nil as Vente and Lewis Miller found the back of the net, while the clean sheet was welcomed after a difficult start to the season defensively.

However, the Hibees have struggled at home this season, particularly in the league where they have only won one of their three games, which is something they will look to change this time out.

One of those defeats at Easter Road actually came at the hands of their opponents on Wednesday when the two teams met on the opening day of the Scottish Premiership.

St Mirren ran out on top of a five-goal thriller in what proved to be an entertaining game after the Buddies made a perfect start with Mark O'Hara and Toyosi Olusanya putting them ahead after 17 minutes.

Hibernian fought back with two late goals as Christian Doidge had seemingly earned his team a point in the 82nd minute, only for Alex Greive to win the game for St Mirren in the 89th.

A repeat of that result would be welcomed by Steve Robinson, who has been guiding his team to a perfect start to the season on all fronts, as they are currently undefeated in the league.

It was the first group stage game of the Scottish League Cup when St Mirren were last beaten, and the team will now be aiming to turn that impressive run of form into some silverware.

Team News

Vente is likely to be a key man for Hibernian this weekend due to his impressive personal start to the season, with three goals in all competitions to his name already.

16-year-old Rory Whittaker was handed his debut for the Hibees at the weekend off the bench, and he could find himself as an option once again in midweek.

Jair Tavares is another player that Montgomery was able to call upon for Hibernian's recent win as he started a match for the first time in over a year.

Playing three at the back has proven to work well for St Mirren this season, and after securing another clean sheet at the weekend that is unlikely to change.

O'Hara was once again able to feature from the first whistle for the second game in a row following his injury issues, and he should find himself in the heart of the midfield once more.

Hibernian possible starting lineup:

Marshall; Miller, Fish, Hanlon, Stevenson; Tavares, Jeggo, Newell; Boyle, Vente, Le Fondre

St Mirren possible starting lineup:

Hemming; Fraser, Gogic, Taylor; Strain, Boyd-Munce, O'Hara, Tanser; McMenamin, Kiltie, Olusanya

We say: Hibernian 1-3 St Mirren

Hibernian might be on a good run of form as of late, but they will not be the favourites in this game, particularly due to the poor defensive displays they have put on this season.

St Mirren are enjoying an incredible start to the new season and with the quality that they have the Buddies should take the victory here.
