Maddison's cheeky response to Saka after dart celebration was copied in north London derby

talksport.com, 24 September 2023, 19:48
James Maddison cheekily fired back at Bukayo Saka after the Arsenal star mimicked his celebration during the Gunners' draw to Tottenham.

A enthralling north London derby saw the spoils shared at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal star Saka scoring a penalty and also playing a telling role in his side's first goal as his strike deflected in-off Cristian Romero.

After the opener, Saka celebrated by throwing an imaginary dart - something that Maddison does after scoring goals - towards the cameras.

It's been interpreted as a dig to England teammate Maddison, who had a productive game himself having assisted Heung-min Son twice for Spurs' goals.

Maddison was then asked about Saka's choice of celebration and admitted there was some pre-match banter between the pair while they were on international duty earlier this month.

The £40million man also reminded the Arsenal star that he skinned Saka en route to crossing the ball to Son for Spurs' first goal.

Arteta says Rice asked to come off and admits to surprise after Arsenal star's injury

"Me and Bukayo had a bit of banter and a bit of trash-talking, if you like, on international duty," Maddison said.

"I got told that he did the darts celebration - he must've still been doing it when I turned him for the first goal... I'll have a little word with him, yeah."

Mikel Arteta's men drew first blood when Saka cut inside from the right and his shot was diverted past Guglielmo Vicario and into the net by Romero.

The away side hit back just before half time when Maddison accelerated past Saka on the left before Son finished the low cross first time.

Saka restored Arsenal's lead on 54 minutes with a calm penalty after the ball hit Romero's hand but Spurs levelled again seconds after the restart when Maddison dispossessed Jorginho before laying the ball on a plate to Son, who slotted the ball past David Raya.
