Knowing they needed to beat Wolves and hope that Man City slip up against Aston Villa, it was always going to be a tense afternoon for fans at Anfield on the final day of the season on Sunday.
Unfortunately a 'false rumour' gave the Reds a glimmer of light on an already difficult afternoon.
City had clawed back a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2 against Villa at the Etihad Stadium when Mohamed Salah netted in front of the Kop to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead in the last ten minutes of their game having trailed 1-0 initially.
That goal from Salah gave supporters at Anfield real hope that they might be able to claim the title if Steven Gerrard's Villa could find an equaliser, something that didn't happen as City secured the title with a 3-2 win.
With fans praying for a miracle, cheers started to rumble around Anfield with speculation suggesting that Villa had in fact equalised against City, something that former City defender Danny Mills saw the funny side of.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said: "There was a great moment on social media where someone had started a rumour at Liverpool that it was 3-3 and Aston Villa had equalised and a massive cheer went up around Anfield and then they clearly realised it wasn't true."
One fan could even be seen signalling the scoreline at the Etihad to Salah during his celebrations.
"I mean, it's cruel but quite funny at the same time," Mills added.
talkSPORT's own Jamie O'Hara was also at Anfield and explained the confusion around the 'misinformation'.
He said: "Salah scored so that it was 2-1 Liverpool and out of nowhere in the corner of the ground a chant started and people were jumping up and down, I think it must have been the Wolves fans.
"It went around the stadium like everyone was getting misinformation that Aston Villa had maybe scored again to make it 3-3.
"The place went mad.
"I was in the gantry and I've got the screens in front of me and the Twitter pages, so I've got all of the Liverpool fans shouting at me 'What's the score, what's the score?' and I'm like 'I don't know!'
"I turn around and they're screaming and I'm like 'it's 3-2 to Man City, it hasn't happened!'
"It was harsh," he laughed. "Whoever started that chant is bang out of order!"
