Cavani filmed swearing at Man Utd fan as farewell turns sour

Edinson Cavani was filmed swearing at a Manchester United fan after their defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Uruguayan striker is leaving Old Trafford in the coming weeks with his contract expiring ahead of next season, having failed to live up to the billing this term. Cavani was handed a rare start in Sunday's game against Palace with Cristiano Ronaldo missing due to a hip injury.

However, it wasn't the send off the 35-year-old may have been hoping for as United slid to a 1-0 defeat and were lucky West Ham also lost, meaning they retained sixth place and a Europa League spot.

It should have been a happy day for Cavani to say good bye to United fans and end a two-year spell that hasn't entirely lived up to the billing many hoped it would, though he has had his moment. But things turned sour between the former PSG man and fans as he was seen swearing at a supporter as he boarded the coach while leaving Selhurst Park.

It is not clear why Cavani was making the obscene gesture in the direction of a fan as he appeared to point to one in particular, but his angry expression suggested he was extremely unhappy with them.

Cavani has since taken to social media to send a message to the club's fans, but it does not seem clear whether he is addressing the fan he swore at. Translated from Spanish, he wrote: "I would have several things to tell you, but I just want you to know that I wish you all the best in what is to come."

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed that Cavani would be leaving the club before the game against Palace. "It would be good to finish this season with a good game, three points, and I'm pretty sure the team sees it the same way," Rangnick told MUTV.

"Out of our starting XI, there will be 10, apart from Edi Cavani, who will still be playing for this club next season. I presume they'd much rather play in the Europa League than the Conference League."

Cavani joined United on a free contract after leaving PSG in 2020, and scored a total of 19 goals in all competitions across two seasons. He only bagged twice this term though, leading to the decision to move him on.
