England make light work of Ivory Coast

marca.com, 29 March 2022, 20:59
Three Lions put three past 10 men with Serge Aurier seeing red

Gareth Southgate's World Cup preparations continued to go well on Tuesday night as they beat Ivory Coast 3-0 at Wembley.

The African side did have to spend the majority of the game with a man fewer on the pitch, though, as Serge Aurier was sent off in the 40th minute. Ollie Watkins, Raheem Sterling, and Tyrone Mings got the goals for Euro 2020's runners-up.

Brilliant footwork from Sterling forced the first. His trickery on the left had the visiting defence puzzled before he squared across the six-yard box and Watkins couldn't miss as he tapped into an open goal from under the crossbar. It was his second England goal.

Aurier then foolishly got himself sent off for dissent, despite Jack Grealish appearing to try to talk the referee out of it, given the game was only a friendly.

Watkins was involved in the second as well, doing well to set England on their way by laying off for Sterling. The Manchester City man had his initial shot stopped, but Grealish cleverly pulled back into his path to allow his club teammate to finish at the second time of asking.

Mings, whose selection caused a bit of controversy this international break, completed the scoring in stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes.

England will now await their fate in the World Cup group draw on April 1 in Doha.
