Chicharito Hernandez and LA Galaxy eliminated from the US Open Cup

Javier Chicharito Hernandez, who played 30 minutes in the second half, was unable to rescue the LA Galaxy as they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the US Open Cup after losing 2-1 to Sacramento Republic on Tuesday night.

LA Galaxy played at home at Dignity Health Sports Park and failed to make use of their advantage. Sacramento won with goals from Rodrigo Lopez in the fourth minute and Luis Felipe in the 70th, while Conor Donovan's own goal had given LA the equaliser in the 18th minute.

The result sees the LA Galaxy eliminated from the competition in the last eight, while Sacramento await their opponent in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Sacramento opened the scoring

The home side left some regular starters on the bench, including Chicharito, and saw Sacramento take an early lead.

Just four minutes into the match, Rodrigo Lopez received the ball inside the box and took a right-footed shot that Jonathan Klinsmann couldn't keep out.

The home side were back on level terms in the 18th minute when Conor Donovan put the ball into his own net to make it 1-1 after a corner kick, giving the hosts hope.

Chicharito came on in the second half, but could do nothing

But in the second half it was the team from Sacramento that had the impetus. LA Galaxy coach Greg Vanney sent on Chicharito, Victor Vazquez and Julian Araujo in the 60th minute, but the substitutions failed to make an impact.

It was Luis Lopez, in the 70th minute and with a left-footed shot outside the box, who scored the winning goal and gave the USL Championship team a place in the semi-finals.
