5 talkings points as Henderson stunner seals Liverpool comeback win vs AC Milan

Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with an instant classic as Jordan Henderson's stunning strike secured three points against AC Milan.

It was a memorable night at Anfield as the Reds sealed a 3-2 comeback victory over the Italians.

Trent Alexander-Arnold helped fire the Reds in front as his deflected effort, which went down as a Fikayo Tomori own goal, gave them a well-deserved lead.

But after Mohamed Salah failed to convert a spot-kick to double their advantage, the Serie A side were somehow in the lead at halftime after a quickfire double from Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz.

Salah then redeemed himself by bringing the hosts level just after the break, before Henderson's screamer put the Reds back on top to seal the win.

Here are the talking points from tonight's Champions League clash.

Trent continues hot start

Trent Alexander-Arnold continued his fine start to the season as he opened the scoring for the Reds.

Liverpool were on the front foot right from the off as AC Milan struggled to deal with their intensity.

And they finally made their dominance count as Trent played a one-two with Mohamed Salah and charged into the box, before his shot was deflected past the keeper.

The Liverpool full-back has been on fire since the campaign has got underway, creating the most chances in the Premier League.

And that form translated onto the European stage with another impressive performance against the Italians.

Pivotal penalty miss

Liverpool had a chance to double their lead in the first half as they were awarded a penalty after Ismaël Bennacer was guilty of handball.

Andy Robertson's shot struck his hand in the area as the referee pointed to the spot.

It wasn't necessarily a stonewall penalty as his hands weren't completely outstretched, but by the letter of the law, it was the right decision.

Salah stepped up but his effort was well saved as Liverpool squandered the opportunity to take a two-goal lead early on.

But he did make amends later on as he equalised for the Jurgen Klopp's men to make it 2-2 and fortunately it didn't have an outcome on the final result.

Milan's five-minute onslaught

Liverpool somehow found themselves losing at the break despite a dominant half.

AC Milan scored two quick-fire goals with their first two shots on target of the game to turn the game on its head.

Ante Rebic equalised for the visitors with a clever low finish, before Brahim Diaz sensationally gave the Italians the lead.

It was a truly wild five minutes or so and encapsulated everything the Champions League is all about.

Hendo the hero

Jordan Henderson fired Liverpool back in front with a thunderbolt of a finish in the second half to make it 3-2.

The ball fell to the captain on the edge of the box and he caught it sweetly on the half volley as it nestled into the bottom corner.

It was fitting goal to win what was a classic Champions League encounter with both teams going for the win.

But Liverpool deserved the victory on the balance of play and it was no surprise to see Henderson come up big once again. A captain's performance.

Van Dijk call pays off

Eyebrows were raised when Virgil van Dijk was named as a substitute as Joe Gomez and Joel Matip anchored the defence.

But the centre-backs nullified AC Milan's threat for the most part. There was a lapse in concentration from Matip for Diaz's go-ahead strike, but to Milan's credit, they were both well-worked goals.

The decision to rest Van Dijk could have been a gamble, but it worked out in the end for Klopp as they were able to rest his star man, who has been carrying a few niggling injuries he picked up on international duty, while still managing to pick up the vital three points.
