Which political party does Megan Rapinoe support and why?

Megan Rapinoe, one of the stars of the US Women's National Soccer Team, is also renowned and acclaimed for her fight for various causes: for equal pay, for her lawsuit with Donald Trump, for her criticism of the Supreme Court's ruling on abortion and for her support of the LGBTQ+ community.

After the United States team won the World Cup 2019 in France, Rapinoe became an idol for some and a villain for others for her refusal to go to the White House in the face of a possible invitation from Donald Trump, with whom she started a feud. Even after the celebration of the title in front of more than 300,000 people, it was suggested to her that she should run for president, but she replied: "I'm sorry, I'm busy".

Although it is not known whether or not she would be interested in starting a political career, which would surely be successful due to the support of the people, in 2019 a Public Policy Polling survey gave her a virtual electoral triumph over Trump, with 42% of the votes against 41% for Trump.

After ruling out his possible candidacy, she made it clear that her support was for the Democratic Party. In 2020 she paid some compliments to the Democratic candidates, such as Senator Elizabeth Warren, whom she called intelligent and sharp, as well as talking about the "radical" Senator Bernie Sanders or Cory Booker.

Why does Rapinoe support the Democrats?

After being recognised at the Sports Illustrated Sportswoman of the Year awards, she made her position clear: her support for the Democrats was to get then-President Trump out of the White House.

The two-time world champion said some three years ago: "I think the most important thing is to get that maniac out of the White House."

Yet she just wants a better world. "We have to do better. We have to love more and hate less. We have to listen more and talk less. It is our responsibility to make the world a better place."

For others, however, Rapinoe does not sit well for her views that largely fall into the mainstream narrative and would rather her focus on sports than constantly engage in political talking points.
