West Ham fan loses finger which is placed on fence in horror moment in Genk

mirror.co.uk, 4 November 2021, 22:53

A West Ham fan lost part of a finger while celebrating one of their team's goals in the Europa League draw with Genk on Thursday night.

The sizeable portion of the finger that had come off was placed on a fence separating supporters from the pitch at the Cegeka Arena.

The Hammers cemented their place at the top of Group H with the 2-2 draw in Belgium and are on the verge of reaching the knockout stages of the competition.

David Moyes was taking charge of his 1000th game as a manager, but it was far from smooth sailing for the Scot and his troops.

The hosts took the lead just four minutes into the clash when Joseph Paintsil darted onto Junya Ito's pass and fired a low strike past Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola.

Who did you think was West Ham's man of the match against Genk? Comment below.

Areola was forced to make a number of saves as West Ham struggled to get to grips with a side they had comfortably beaten in the reverse fixture at the London Stadium.

But Said Benrahma finally dragged the visitors level just before the hour mark when he fired in from Vladimir Coufal's smart pull-back.

Benrahma, 26, then put his side in front with eight minutes remaining after he worked an opening with some clever footwork.

The Algerian international then beat Genk keeper Maarten Vandevoordt with a low finish that fizzed under the Belgian.

And it was during the celebrations of that goal that a Hammers supporter lost part of his finger in the stands.

A video circulated on social media that showed the finger being picked up and placed on a fence guarding the away fans.

Other supporters are understood to have raced to inform stewards of the incident and request medical attention for the injured fan.

Mirror Sport understands that the stricken supporter did receive medical treatment.

To make matters worse for the fan, Moyes' men were forced to settle for a point after Tomas Soucek inadvertently directed a cross into his own net with a header with three minutes remaining.

Moyes hailed the away support following the game, with his side now four points clear at the top of their group.

"I thought the away fans were fabulous. They were great, right from the start, they were incredible," the West Ham boss said.

"They were in the ground very early but I think in the Premier League our away fans have been very good and we appreciated it.

"They were all looking forward to the European games they were all really looking forward to because it's something which we've not had."

And the Hammers manager admitted that a draw was a fair result, despite his side having more shots on target than their hosts.

"On reflection, a draw might have been the right result. Genk caused us problems in the opening 20 minutes they started better and we needed our goalkeeper to make two or three saves," he said.

"I thought after that we had the majority of the play and probably we should have created more opportunities."
