Tuesday's League One predictions including Huddersfield vs. Birmingham

sportsmole.co.uk, 28 January 2025, 06:00
Bolton vs. Northampton (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

After making a winning start to the post-Ian Evatt era, managerless Bolton Wanderers seek back-to-back League One victories for the first time in 2025 when Northampton Town visit the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Trotters left Huddersfield Town's turf with a 1-0 success to their name at the weekend, while their visitors picked up a highly creditable point away to promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers.

We say: Bolton Wanderers 2-0 Northampton Town

Northampton have gone nine games without registering multiple goals and have to go back to September for the last time they scored more than once in a League One away match, two harbingers of doom for their midweek trip to Bolton.

Nolan's men should not be torn to shreds defensively, but if a morale-boosted Bolton can find their way through - which they almost certainly will - we cannot envisage the goal-shy visitors responding.

Burton Albion vs. Reading (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

A Burton Albion side seeking their third straight League One victory host a Reading outfit out to avoid a third successive loss in the division on Tuesday evening.

Gary Bowyer's men prevailed in a six-goal spectacular with Rotherham United over the weekend, while their visitors succumbed to a 2-0 loss away to Leyton Orient.

We say: Burton Albion 2-1 Reading

With a newfound sense of confidence and a new striker in Bodvarsson firing on all cylinders, the stars are aligning for Burton to repeat last season's home trick over an ailing Reading side.

There may be 13 places and 20 points between the two clubs in the table, but the form book does not reflect that disparity, and Bowyer's men have our vote to prevail even if their familiar defensive struggles at home rear their ugly heads.

Charlton vs. Bristol Rovers (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Following the most dramatic of dramatic successes at the weekend, Charlton Athletic make a swift return to The Valley to host Bristol Rovers in Tuesday's League One affair.

The Addicks left it incredibly late to defeat Shrewsbury Town 1-0 at the weekend, whereas their visitors' inconsistency continued in a 2-0 loss away to Wigan Athletic.

We say: Charlton Athletic 2-0 Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers may have been a bogey team for Charlton of late, but the Gas have been found wanting away from home all season, whereas the Addicks have developed a defensive mean streak on their own patch.

As a result, we have complete faith in the hosts to end their hoodoo against their visitors in midweek, enhancing their playoff credentials in the process.

> League One preview: Charlton vs Bristol Rovers

Exeter vs. Leyton Orient (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Leyton Orient will look to extend their 10-game unbeaten league run when they travel to St James Park for Tuesday's meeting with Exeter City.

In contrast to the visitors, the Grecians will be low on confidence after failing to win any of their last six matches in League One.

We say: Exeter City 1-2 Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient will carry significant momentum into the midweek fixture, and we think that they will extend their 10-game unbeaten run by claiming a narrow win over an Exeter side that have lost three of their previous five home league matches.

> League One preview: Exeter vs Leyton Orient

Lincoln vs. Blackpool (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Lincoln City will be looking to claim a third consecutive victory when they welcome Blackpool to the LNER Stadium for Tuesday's League One contest.

Meanwhile, the Tangerines will be aiming to record back-to-back wins after getting the better of Exeter City at the weekend.

We say: Lincoln City 1-1 Blackpool

Blackpool may have gone six league games without a win before Saturday's victory over Exeter, but they are now unbeaten in five matches after drawing four consecutive matches prior to their trip to Devon.

With that in mind, we think the Tangerines could play out another draw when they face a Lincoln side that have lost just one of their previous five home league matches.

> League One preview: Lincoln vs Blackpool

Mansfield vs. Crawley (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Mansfield Town will look to bounce back from three consecutive defeats in all competitions when they play host to Crawley Town in Tuesday's League One contest.

Like their hosts, the Reds will be desperate to return to collect maximum points after failing to win any of their last seven league matches.

We say: Mansfield Town 2-0 Crawley Town

Mansfield may have lost their last three competitive matches, but they have won two of their previous three home league matches, and we think they will make full use of home advantage to claim all three points on Tuesday, especially as Crawley have lost four of their last five away matches.

> League One preview: Mansfield vs Crawley

Peterborough vs. Wigan (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Wigan Athletic will hope to climb towards the top half of the League One table when they travel to Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday to play relegation-threatened Peterborough United.

The home side are sixth last in 19th place with 27 points and are two places and six points above the relegation zone after their 5-1 defeat against Lincoln City on Sunday, while Wigan beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 on Saturday and are 16th with 33 points.

We say: Peterborough United 0-2 Wigan Athletic

Wigan have been in better goalscoring form of late, and it would not be surprising to see them take the lead on Tuesday.

Additionally, Peterborough have struggled to secure positive results, and it is difficult to see them overturning a deficit given the visitors' strong defensive record.

> League One preview: Peterborough vs Wigan

Rotherham vs. Cambridge (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

In a clash that could affect the race for survival and promotion in League One, Rotherham United will welcome Cambridge United to the New York Stadium on Tuesday.

The hosts are 13th with 34 points following their 4-2 defeat against Burton Albion on Saturday but could move within five points of the promotion playoff spots with a victory against Cambridge, who are third last in 22nd place with 21 points but beat Mansfield Town 3-2 on Saturday.

We say: Rotherham United 2-1 Cambridge United

Rotherham should be considered strong favourites as they boast a strong record at home and are in good goalscoring form.

While Cambridge could find the back of the net given the hosts have been porous defensively of late, they have struggled away from home all season, and it is difficult to see them picking up any points on Tuesday.

> League One preview: Rotherham vs Cambridge

Stockport vs. Shrewsbury (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Promotion-chasing Stockport County are set to host last-placed Shrewsbury Town in League One on Tuesday at Edgeley Park.

The home side beat Crawley Town 2-0 on Saturday and are fifth with 44 points, while the away team were defeated 1-0 by Charlton Athletic on the same date and are 24th with 20 points, seven points and four places from safety.

We say: Stockport County 2-1 Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury have proven difficult to defeat in recent weeks, and they will no doubt frustrate Stockport at times.

It would not be surprising if the hosts eventually emerged victorious considering the visitors' struggles on the road, but they are unlikely to win by multiple goals.

> League One preview: Stockport vs Shrewsbury

Wrexham vs. Stevenage (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Wrexham's promotion charge continues on Tuesday when they welcome Stevenage to the Racecourse Ground in their 28th League One game of the season.

The Welsh hosts managed to hold league leaders Birmingham City to a 1-1 stalemate last Thursday and are third with 52 points, whereas Stevenage are 15th with 34 points beat Barnsley 1-0 on Saturday.

We say: Wrexham 1-0 Stevenage

Considering that Stevenage have been in fine form at the back, it would not be surprising if Tuesday's match was low scoring.

Wrexham should be seen as clear favourites given their phenomenal home record, but they will almost certainly have their work cut out to break down the visitors' defence.

> League One preview: Wrexham vs Stevenage

Wycombe vs. Barnsley (Tuesday, 7.45pm)

Two teams battling for promotion to the Championship will lock horns on Tuesday evening, as Wycombe Wanderers welcome Barnsley for what is shaping up to be an intriguing battle in England's third tier.

Wycombe are currently second in the League One table, picking up 55 points from their opening 27 matches of the campaign, while Barnsley are sixth, boasting 42 points from their first 27 games of the 2024-25 season.

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 1-1 Barnsley

Barnsley have been excellent on their travels this season, but Wycombe have only lost two of their 13 league matches in front of their own supporters; we are expecting a tight match on Tuesday night, with the points potentially being shared in the promotion six-pointer.

> League One preview: Wycombe vs Barnsley

Huddersfield vs. Birmingham (Tuesday, 8.00pm)

Reeling from their first League One defeat in almost four months, things do not get any easier for Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night, when they face division leaders Birmingham City at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Terriers' 16-match unbeaten run in the third tier came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, while the table-toppers' high-profile meeting with Wrexham ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

We say: Huddersfield Town 0-1 Birmingham City

Having enjoyed a rare weekend off while Huddersfield's efforts went unrewarded against Bolton, Birmingham will arrive at the John Smith's Stadium with the fresher legs and optimism of picking up their first league win away to the Terriers in over 10 years.

Duff's men have started to lose their dominant streak on home soil, and with integral midfielder Wiles potentially either missing out or not operating at full fitness, we cannot envisage the hosts stunting Birmingham's title charge.
