Sommer is ready to quit Bayern Munich unless he is given guarantees over replacing Manuel Neuer as the German giants' number one.
The 34-year-old would be a cheaper alternative to Jordan Pickford and Andre Onana, who are both believed to be on Ten Hag's wish-list.
United have verbally agreed a new contract with David de Gea but the Spaniard is yet to put pen to paper.
The delay over De Gea's future is holding up Dean Henderson making a permanent move to Nottingham Forest.
Retaining their star man
Newcastle are willing to make midfielder Bruno Guimaraes the highest-paid player in their history to tie him down to a new contract.
Guimaraes has become a cult hero at St James Park following a £40m move from Lyon in January 2022 and played a major role in their qualification for the Champions League.
Despite being backed by the Saudi Arabian millions, Newcastle have adopted a strict wage structure but are willing to break it for Guimaraes.
The Brazilian international, who has caught the eye of Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, has indicated he is happy at St James Park.

Parker is also believed to be on the radar of Leicester, although talkSPORT understands the Foxes have not given up hope of tempting Graham Potter to drop down a division.
Potter rejected an approach from the Foxes in the immediate aftermath of his Chelsea sacking.
