Tottenham's fresh stance on renewing Conte interest as pressure mounts on Nuno

mirror.co.uk, 31 October 2021, 17:20

Tottenham look set to revive their interest in Antonio Conte due to the uncertainly surrounding current boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

According to reports, Nuno is on the brink of being dismissed just months after being handed the reins in north London following Saturday's grim 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

If the Spurs hierarchy does decide to axe him, then it's likely that Conte will be back in the frame for the job that he turned down in the summer.

He could face competition in the form of Paulo Fonseca, who The Mirror exclusively revealed was being lined up by Spurs on Sunday.

But Tutto Mercato are also reporting that Spurs are working hard on a deal for Conte - and that Sunday night could prove pivotal on finding an agreement.

Both Conte and Fonseca have been in demand in the Premier League over recent weeks.

Fonseca had been the odds-on favourite for the vacant Newcastle United job whilst Conte's name cropped up this week following speculation over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's future at United.

Spurs sounded the duo out over the summer but failed to come to terms on a deal with Conte before seemingly getting cold feet over appointing Fonseca.

Daniel Levy eventually handed Nuno the job - but he already looks doomed after a dismal run of form.

Levy was reportedly furious with the result, according to the Telegraph, and it's understood that he and technical director Fabio Paratici were locked in discussions over Nuno's future on Sunday just 24 hours after the game.

Nuno has only been in the role for just under four months after he was appointed in July - but the honeymoon period is already well and truly over for the ex-Wolves man, who was booed by furious Spurs fans on Saturday.

Fans are furious with Levy and Nuno, with many believing that the Portuguese boss couldn't be further from the brief that Levy issued when discussing the brief for finding a new head coach that inferred heavily to the club's attacking DNA.

But despite that attacking vow, Spurs failed to register a single shot on target for the first home game in eight years during the feeble surrender to United.

The defeat was Tottenham's fifth in their last 10 Premier League games and leaves them eighth in the table.

Things had started promisingly for Nuno, with Spurs heading into the first international break at the top of the table following three consecutive wins to start the season.

But things have slowly unravelled since with a string of sorry results.

Spurs have also last all four London derbies they've played so far this season to pile the pressure even further on their beleaguered boss.

And Nuno admitted he understood fans frustrations following another poor performance.

"We're not on the right track," Nuno told Sky Sports. "We totally understand the criticism, it's part of football. When the team doesn't perform, the fans suffer, the fans are not happy and they showed they are not happy.

"It's up to us to take it, tell them that we try our best, tell them that we are sorry because we didn't perform as we wanted. And we keep on trying and in a humble way ask them to support us all the way."
