Thiago Alcantara hits stunning 25-yard half-volley and Mohamed Salah grabs 17th goal of season as Liverpool seal comfortable Champions League victory over Porto

The Reds midfielder swept a fierce low effort into the bottom corner in what was surely the goal of the Champions League season so far, before Mohamed Salah sealed the 2-0 win for the six-time European champions with 20 minutes remaining.

The half-volley early in the second half was worthy of winning any game and the fact it came in a dead-rubber having already qualified for the last 16 should not diminish it's quality.

The Spaniard endured a mixed start to his Anfield career, contracting COVID-19 shortly after arriving and then missing almost three months with a knee injury sustained in his first Merseyside derby.

But this was one of his best performances in the red shirt, and his goal showed exactly why he was hailed as being the signing to take Klopp's side to the next level following his £20million transfer from Bayern Munich last year.

Joel Matip couldn't believe the quality of Thiago's strike as he reacted in shire shock to the strike from his teammate.

It came before Salah, who has been electric for the Reds ever since signing for the club, grabbed his 17th of the campaign to take his personal Champions League tally to 32 with Steven Gerrard's European record of 41 well within his sights.

Thiago, though, incredibly thinks he's scored better in the past when quizzed by BT Sport after the game - much to the surprise of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain praised his side for their display in the match - even if they had already qualified from their group prior to the Anfield clash.

"We wanted to approach the game properly and win it, it's important to keep standards up," he told BT Sport. "We had a good performance at the weekend and we wanted to put in another one tonight.

"There were changes but it was important everyone came in and did a good job and continued winning ways. It was professional. Three points is what we wanted."

Jurgen Klopp was also pleased with his side and couldn't hide his amazement at Thiago's sumptuous strike.

Reflecting on the game, the German said: "It was good. We could have had better, and been more calm in goalscoring situations. But it was hectic, which is not unusual for a team who has not played together much.

"Some people might have thought we would play an easy game but we were not here for that. We won the game with two exceptional goals - especially Thiago's. Wow!

"So many good things happened tonight, both individually and as a team. We had young players playing, players back from injury and the right players got minutes and the right players got some rest.

"If you are in our squad you are a good player, it's as simple as that. I would not throw a player into a game if he was not ready. With Tyler (Morton) some might have been surprised before kick off but he did exceptionally well and I am pleased he put in a performance like this."
