The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new manager after parting ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last weekend, with Mauricio Pochettino the heavy favourite to succeed him.
However, it's reported that Paris Saint-Germain have blocked Man United's approach for the Argentine, meaning hiring an interim boss until the end of the season looks the more likely outcome.
Ernesto Valverde and Rudi Garcia are understood to be in talks over the position but Schmeichel believes Man United should avoid hiring a temp as it could cause confusion at the club.
Schmeichel didn't say who he felt should be given the job permanently, but if they are forced into hiring an interim boss, former teammate Steve Bruce could be a 'really good option'.
"I'm a bit confused about the communication that goes out at Man United," Schmeichel told talkSPORT. "This idea about an interim manager up until the summer and then somebody else from there.
"But if that is the case, a few former players could put their name in the hat. Someone like Steve Bruce could be a really good option - a safe pair of hands to take charge of the team and the club for the rest of the season.
"If I'm honest I hope that the next manager will be picked and will be in place before an interim manager is named because I don't think the club needs to have that kind of confusion.
"What the team needs more than anything is new voices in the dressing room, something different, another kind of inspiration.
"Even Michael Carrick said that, he worked for Ole for so long and he's going to be the same as him.
"Carrick did very well in Villarreal but it's just one game. It's very important we get a manager in place and we look towards the future."
