Teammates stunned by Alexander-Arnold goal but he might have to thank ref Dean

Liverpool's Anfield stadium has been host to some of football's most incredible moments throughout its storied history, but a simple goal in a 3-1 win over Newcastle was enough to blow away one of football's most decorated players.

Ushered on by supporters in the Kop, fans barely had time to get to the letter 't' in the word 'shoot' before Trent Alexander-Arnold had the ball in the net with one of his most impressive goals.

Newcastle's Martin Dubravka had the left side of his goal covered, and sorted his feet out quickly, but even so he had no chance of keeping Newcaslte in the game as the ball snapped his fingers back.

Liverpool's players have had plenty to marvel over this season, particularly from Mohamed Salah who managed two goal of the season contenders in the space of two weeks against Manchester City and Norwich.

Even Thiago himself had Europe drooling with a sumptuous strike against Porto in the Champions League that defied physics.

However, the Spaniard was still left with his hands on his head by teammate Alexander-Arnold, whose laser-like long distance effort was one to savour.

As a right-back, Alexander-Arnold's goals are never simple, usually coming from long range or set-pieces, but his Newcastle effort was arguably the best of his 11 goals for his boyhood club.

The England international now has two goals and nine assists in all competitions this season, matching his tally from last term in 27 fewer games.

Alexander-Arnold may have had some help on the night though, with a run across the goalkeeper's line of sight from referee Mike Dean perhaps taking some time out of Dubravka's reaction speed.

Dean potentially chose the wrong direction when he saw the 23-year-old shaping to shoot, with his decoy run across the face of goal adding an extra element to the rocket.

The Liverpool star even followed up his iconic goal with an iconic celebration, taking inspiration from NBA great Steph Curry's three finger move.

The pair previously met at Anfield and both continue to boost their reputations as long-range specialists.

Alexander-Arnold has seen his position as the division's best right-back put under extra scrutiny this season, with Chelsea's Reece James matching his nine league goal contributions with some stunning displays.

But with the Liverpool man already on pace to beat his four goal and 14 assist 2019/20 season, history could be in the making with even the likes of Dani Alves and Roberto Carlos left marvelling at some extraordinary numbers.
