Sunday's Premier League predictions including Man United vs. Brighton

sportsmole.co.uk, 19 January 2025, 00:29
Everton vs. Spurs (Sunday, 2.00pm)

Premier League football returns to Goodison Park for the second time in a week when Everton host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

David Moyes will take charge of his second game since returning to the club, while Ange Postecoglou has been given assurances that his days are not numbered at Tottenham, despite their worrying league position.

We say: Everton 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur

While Everton cannot score, that is certainly not Tottenham's problem, because the visitors have netted nearly three times as many goals this season, and unless the Toffees can get attacking reinforcements through the door, that is not going to change.

Even their often stingy defence has been breached far too often for their liking recently, leaving Everton in a perilous position, so they may be looking for favours from other teams this weekend.

Man Utd vs. Brighton (Sunday, 2.00pm)

Hoping to slay a second South Coast team at Old Trafford in the space of a week, Manchester United host Brighton & Hove Albion in Sunday afternoon's Premier League scrap.

The Red Devils needed a dash of Ivorian inspiration in Thursday's 3-1 comeback win over Southampton, while the Seagulls enjoyed a more routine 2-0 triumph at Ipswich Town.

We say: Manchester United 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Hurzeler's Seagulls are yet to be kept at bay on the road this season, while Man United were nothing short of embarrassing against Southampton and cannot rely on 22-year-old Diallo to bail them out forever.

Not a single previous Premier League meeting between the Red Devils and Brighton has finished level, but given the visitors' propensity for one-pointers and fatigue on both sides, we expect that streak to be snapped on Sunday.

Nott'm Forest vs. Southampton (Sunday, 2.00pm)

Astonishingly separated by 35 points in the mid-season Premier League rankings, genuine title contenders Nottingham Forest and basement boys Southampton collide in Sunday's clash at the City Ground.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men took a creditable point off of Liverpool in Tuesday's 1-1 draw, two days before the Saints were cruelly slain 3-1 by Manchester United.

We say: Nottingham Forest 2-0 Southampton

Not since their days in the second tier in 1935 have Southampton been beaten in four straight matches against Nottingham Forest, but that sequence will surely be snapped at the City Ground.

The hosts are working with two days' more rest, while their visitors have concerns over the fitness of their star name in attack, so another Tricky Trees success is the only outcome we can envisage.

Ipswich vs. Man City (Sunday, 4.30pm)

Two days on from tying striking sensation Erling Haaland down to an unprecedented new contract, Manchester City have some Premier League mistakes to rectify away to Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

The reigning champions let a 2-0 lead slip in a frenetic 2-2 draw with Brentford in midweek, but the Tractor Boys could not emulate the Bees' comeback in their home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

We say: Ipswich Town 0-2 Manchester City

Do not be surprised to see Ipswich switch to a back five for Sunday's game - such an approach very nearly paid dividends against Arsenal in December - and City might also shuffle the pack ahead of a crucial Champions League fixture.

However, Guardiola's men will undoubtedly break through eventually, and as McKenna's men go in search of the leveller, space should open up for the champions to exploit as they quickly return to triumphant ways.
