Simon Jordan responds to Harry Maguire's mum and gives David Beckham example

The Manchester United star has been met with a barrage of criticism since being called up to the England squad, despite a lack of minutes with his club.

On Tuesday night the situation came to a head when he scored an own goal against Scotland at Hampden Park, with jeers heard from both sets of fans.

There has been plenty of talk since and Maguire's mother has come out to hit back at the abuse directed at her son.

And, speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan has told the defender to look to David Beckham as a source of inspiration to beat the boo boys.

"It's her son, she can write whatever she likes, but this is a moment in time that only Harry can overcome," the former Crystal Palace owners said.

"If you remember David Beckham after the 1998 World Cup and that game against Argentina, he came back as public enemy No.1 in England, there were burning effigies, but he overcame that with his performances - that is what Harry Maguire has to do.

"What particular pundits or sections of the media are Maguire's mother and Gareth Southgate referring to?

"Who are the pundits and outlets who have taken it beyond his performances and have turned it into abuse? Because I have not seen it.

"It's the fans who have started this abuse. Manchester United fans have been booing him.

"This booing of Harry Maguire is not right, but the criticism of him being picked for England when he's not playing for United, and his mistakes on the pitch, that is the territory of being a high-paid footballer.

"Where is the abuse in the media? I can't see it. All I see is that he's an average defender.

"That's my opinion. I'm not saying he's ugly and stupid. It is not the mainstream media that is doing this.

"Booing him and making personal insults is destructive, but it's the way of the world in football and with fans and it's what comes with being a footballer.

"I can see why Zoe Maguire feels the need to respond, but it's your strength of character and the support of those around you will see you through."

Maguire has played just 23 minutes of football this season, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 loss against Arsenal, before his call-up to the England squad.

But he has been a bit-part player under Erik ten Hag for most of his tenure, being relegated to fifth-choice centre-back, even behind Luke Shaw, a left-back.

Even with Raphael Varane out injured, Ten Hag has opted to use Victor Lindelof while a move to West Ham fell through in the summer as Maguire opted to fight for his spot at United.

"I want to do that and every time I train or play, I will give everything," he said. "At club football, I want to play games, I want to play football.

"The first four weeks were hard because it was one game a week and the manager didn't select me but we have lots of games coming up now and I am sure I will play lots of games."
