Ronaldo's former teammate threatens news crew with X-rated rant

talksport.com, 17 January 2025, 08:00
Footballer turned fisherman Fabio Coentrao has certainly had better days.

The two-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid made headlines at the start of Thursday morning when he was caught with a ton of illegal live seafood.

If that wasn't bad enough, he's now been filmed losing his temper and appearing to threaten one of Portugal's main news networks.

At the start of the day, Jornal de Noticas reported that an operation took place where the former left-back had been caught with a tonne of illegal live seafood in the port of Povoa de Varzim in Porto.

The Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) went on to announce the suspension of three illegal warehouses in the port, one of which was Coentrao's, and the seizure of 17 tonnes of food.

The news broke in the morning and by the afternoon the country's leading news outlet SIC Noticias sent a camera crew to the location of 'Vitoria Coentrao' where the owner came out to confront them.

The 36-year-old is seen facing up to the cameraman telling him: "Get the camera out of here you son of a b****. Do you know the news? Don't make the same mistake as Jornal de Notícias."

Voices are heard telling him to calm down, and while walking away swearing, he turns back and says: "I'll give you some advice: Don't film my house. Don't film my house."

SIC Noticas claim that Coentrao went on to threaten to destroy their camera equipment despite them being in a place where they were authorised to be.

In a statement the ASAE said: "Due to the illegal exercise of the warehousing activity and subsequent placement on the market of products without due identification mark we seized more than 17 tonness of various foodstuffs and also 313kg of live crustaceans, all with an estimated value of more than €68,000."

Jornal de Notícias claim that the 313kg of crustaceans were from Coentrao's warehouse and constitute live spider crabs, lobsters and shrimps.

They add that they also seized 760kg more of goods without invoices and if sold to the public the entire amount could fetch €16,000.

If the goods are found to be acceptable for human consumption it will be donated to social institutions, while the spider crabs will be returned to the sea.

Coentrao wasn't just your everyday footballer during his career, he was one of the elite, earning 52 caps for Portugal and winning nine trophies alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

A former Benfica academy player who went on to star for the first team before his £25million move to Spain, Coentrao finished his career back home in the fishing town of Rio Ave in 2021.

He then returned to the sea, and said in an interview: "My roots have been here since I was born.

"My father always had a boat, he was really into fishing. I used to go a lot with my father. I liked it very much.

"Whenever I had that bit of time off, whenever I was on holiday, my life was... it was the sea, it was fishing.

"And of course I knew that one day football would end, I would have to take another direction in my life.

"My happiness is this land, the sea. And obviously that being so, I want to lead this life."

Coentrao is the owner of three large fishing boats, and it's reported that he's now facing huge fines.
