Roma's El Shaarawy disagrees with furious Mourinho's "poor referee" rant

AS Roma star Stephan El Shaarawy has refuted Jose Mourinho 's claim that the referee was to blame for their disappointing 2-2 draw with Bodo/Glint in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night.

The Serie A outfit were seeking to avenge the humiliating 6-1 defeat they suffered in Norway a couple of weeks ago.

But they had to fight to claim a share of the spoils after Bodo/Glint had twice taken the lead.

Roger Ibanez and El Shaarawy were on target to ensure Roma kept their qualification hopes alive.

Not for the first time this season, Mourinho was left fuming with the match officials after they ignored two penalty shouts for his side - and he made no attempt to hide it after the game.

"I think the result is harsh on us. It wasn't a great performance, we made a lot of technical errors, especially in the first half when playing out from the back. Every time it went to [Jordan] Veretout or [Ebrima] Darboe, we lost the ball," Mourinho blasted after the match when speaking to Sky Sport Italia.

"The reality of the game is 2-2, but the two penalties were clear as day. Clear as day. You can talk about whatever you want, but the reality is 2-2, they had two shots on target and two goals. We scored two goals and had two clear penalties denied.

"I don't know if they get referees who are poor and starting their careers for the Conference League. I didn't say anything about the referee in Norway, because we lost 6-1, but here the two penalties were clear."

But El Shaarawy disagreed with Mourinho's verdict - and instead claimed that Roma needed to put "more quality and soul" into games rather than "cling to incidents".

"I don't think it helps right now if we cling to incidents. We need to put more quality and soul into the games to take them home. We did well to get back into it, but that's not enough," said the Roma star.

"I try to give my all in every game and that's what we must all do, whether we start or come off the bench."

Mourinho's verbal volley after the match marks the second time in a week that he's taken aim at match officials after he was dismissed in last Sunday's ill-tempered clash with Napoli.

Despite a promising start to life in Italy, things appear to be slowly unravelling for the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss after a string of concerning results.

Their failure to put Bodo/Glint to the sword means Roma have now won just once in their last seven games.

Mourinho felt that a combination of struggles in attack and poor refereeing has cost them dearly during their dismal recent run.

"It's true, [Nicolo] Zaniolo and [Tammy] Abraham are not in good shape," Mourinho added.

"Only El Shaarawy is doing well in attack at the moment, [Eldor] Shomurodov did fairly well off the bench. We can look at those pragmatic statistics, but how many points did we lose because of refereeing errors? Look at the games with Juventus, Milan and Bodo/Glimt."
