Rangnick decides Martial and Lingard's fate ahead of Man Utd's January shake-up

Anthony Martial has made it clear, through his agent, he wants to leave Man Utd in January, while Jesse Lingard is also unhappy with his game-time - with Ralf Rangnick keen to cull his squad numbers

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are set to lead the Manchester United exodus next month as Ralf Rangnick starts to shape his squad.

Rangnick has admitted the squad he inherited from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is too large and needs to be trimmed, although there are unlikely to be any new arrivals when the transfer window opens.

England goalkeeper Dean Henderson is another player keen to leave - on loan - next month, having seen David De Gea re-establish himself as United's No.1 this season.

Ajax have expressed interest in taking Henderson on loan, with the 23-year-old, who has played just twice this season, keen on the move to get some much-needed playing time.

But interim boss Ragnick is understood to be reluctant to let Henderson leave, because it would leave him with 35-year-old Tom Heaton as cover, should De Gea be sidelined by injury.

Martial and Lingard both want to leave in January, citing a lack of game time, with Rangnick understood to be happy for both to leave, as long as United's valuations are met.

Lingard could join West Ham, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell in the second half of last season, although United are seeking around £20million for him, which could thwart any deal.

With the 29-year-old out of contract in six months, few clubs will be willing to meet United's asking price, given Lingard will be available to sign as a free agent in the summer.

Martial's agent, Philippe Lamboley, has made public his client's desire to leave, although Rangnick or United have yet to hold talks with the striker's representative over a potential move.

United value Martial at £30m, having paid Monaco an initial fee of £36m in 2016, although that valuation, like that of Lingard, could make it difficult for any permanent deal to be brokered.

That could mean a loan deal is Martial's best hope of moving on next month, although both he and United are said to favour a permanent deal, which is also the case for England international Lingard.

Atletico Madrid, United's opponents in the Champions League last 16, could swoop for Martial, who has two-and-a-half years left on his current deal.

Another player who could be offloaded next month is defender Phil Jones, although Donny van de Beek, overlooked by Solskajer, is valued by Rangnick and will not be allowed to leave.

United's game against Brighton today was called off because of an outbreak of Covid within Rangnick's squad, which left him with just nine established players available for selection.

Striker Edinson Cavani, who was looking to make his way back from injury this weekend, admitted he and United cannot look too far ahead.

"I think one of the most important things is to always approach games and prepare for them on a strictly match-by-match basis," said Cavani.

"Don't make a lot of plans in your head about anything in the long-term. I think December's an important month to think about and take in that way."
