Preview: Cadiz vs. Alaves - prediction, team news, lineups

sportsmole.co.uk, 8 January 2021, 12:58

Alaves travel to Andalusia on Sunday for their afternoon kickoff with Cadiz at the Nuevo Estadio Ramon de Carranza.

Cadiz, who have gone five games without a win in La Liga, will be looking to get their season back on track when they line up against their Basque visitors.

The only two La Liga matchups between these clubs came in the 2005-06 season, with both of those fixtures ending in goalless draws.

This time out, it is safe to assume that both managers will think they have what it takes to come away from the tie with more than a single point.

After their impressive start to the season, Alvaro Cervera 's Cadiz have hit a snag in their campaign, with the team struggling for goals as much as they have been struggling for wins.

The Yellow Submarine have only scored one goal in their last five games, a statistic that is no doubt giving Cervera sleepless nights.

Cervera's men look to be becoming slightly over-reliant on veteran striker Alvaro Negredo, who has been involved in four out of seven of Cadiz's last league goals.

Recent league form aside, Cadiz were able to see off Pontevedra in the Copa del Rey in their midweek game, with the tie having to go all the way to penalties to find a winner.

Similarly, Alaves managed to find a way past Deportivo La Coruna earlier in the week, making their trip to Galicia worthwhile.

Much like their Andalusian opponents, El Glorioso have found wins hard to come by in recent weeks.

Pablo Machin 's men have won only once in their last six games and the Basque outfit now find themselves just two points off the relegation zone.

Thankfully for Machin, Cadiz have the worst home form in the league, having only won once at the Ramon de Carranza this season.

Machin will certainly look to his dynamic duo Lucas Perez and Joselu to provide the goals needed to best Cadiz and heap pressure on Cervera.

After an exhausting 120 minutes of football in the week, Cervera's men may be feeling a bit worse for wear coming into this game.

This could be a problem for Cervera, who is already without Sergio Gonzalez and Salvi Sanchez due to COVID-19.

Marcos Mauro and Luismi Quezada are also unlikely to feature due to muscular injuries.

Alaves will be without their defensive rock Victor Laguardia, who was sent off against Atletico Madrid last time out.

Rodrigo Ely and Pere Pons are both also expected to sit this one out due to injury.

Cadiz possible starting lineup:

Ledesma; Carcelen, Alcala, Cala, Espino; Izquierdo, Jonsson, Fali, Alex; Lozano, Negredo

Alaves possible starting lineup:

Pacheco; Aguirregabiria, Rodriguez, Lejeune, Carballo; Jota, Battaglia, Pina, Rioja; Perez, Joselu

We say: Cadiz 0-1 Alaves

These two are certainly not La Liga's most attacking outfits so do not expect a goal-fest. Cadiz have been poor at home this season - aside from a famous win over Barcelona - and we think Alaves have what it takes to find three points in Andalusia.
