Portsmouthvs.Millwall

sportsmole.co.uk, 26 January 2025, 17:13
Portsmouth will look to bounce back from a heavy defeat to West Bromwich Albion when they welcome Millwall to Fratton Park for a rearranged Championship fixture on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the visitors will be aiming to clinch consecutive victories after getting the better of Luton Town in their most recent outing.

Match preview

Portsmouth are languishing in 21st place and one point above the drop zone after winning seven, drawing eight and losing 13 of their 28 league matches.

Pompey experienced a disappointing trip to The Hawthorns on Saturday, conceding four first-half goals in a heavy 5-1 defeat against playoff hopefuls West Brom.

That result represented a sixth consecutive away league defeat, extending their winless run on the road to 10 Championship matches (D2, L8).

In contrast to their poor away form, Portsmouth have put together an impressive run of results at Fratton Park, having won six of their last seven home matches (D1), including wins in each of their last four home games since playing out a goalless draw with Norwich City on December 10.

Portsmouth have scored three goals or more in five of those seven home fixtures, while they also managed to stay resolute at the opposite end of the pitch, conceding just four goals across their unbeaten home run.

They will hope home advantage can help them beat Millwall for the first time since recording a 1-0 away victory in October 2010.

Millwall travel to the South Coast in a positive mood after they edged out Luton at the weekend to end a six-game winless league run (D3, L3).

Aaron Connolly missed a first-half spot-kick at Kenilworth Road, but fortunately for the January addition, Mihailo Ivanovic found the net in the second period to spare his teammate's blushes and clinch the first league win of Alex Neil's tenure.

As a result of the 1-0 victory, the Lions moved up to 16th place in the Championship table, leaving them seven points clear of the drop zone ahead of Tuesday's trip to Fratton Park.

Millwall will still be keen need to improve in the final third, having scored just 27 goals in 28 matches this season, making them the joint second-lowest scorers in the Championship alongside Plymouth Argyle.

In particular, the Lions have taken time to find their shooting boots on the road, demonstrated by the fact they are yet to score in the opening half an hour of a Championship away game this season.

However, they will fancy their chances of getting the better of Portsmouth, having won each of their last four competitive meetings, including a 1-0 EFL Cup win in their most recent trip to Fratton Park in August.

Team News

Portsmouth are unable to call upon the defensive quartet of Conor Shaughnessy, Ibane Bowat, Regan Poole and Jacob Farrell.

Pompey's injury list also includes Mark O'Mahony, Kusini Yengi and Paddy Lane, with the latter set to miss the rest of the season after sustaining a knee injury earlier this month.

Jordan Williams, Rob Atkinson, Freddie Potts, Josh Murphy and Callum Lang are all set to return to the lineup, while January signing Thomas Waddingham could be given more minutes as a substitute after coming off the bench to score a consolation on his debut on Saturday.

As for the visitors, they are without Danny McNamara and Ryan Leonard after the pair recently sustained knee and calf injuries respectively.

Lukas Jensen and Calum Scanlon were forced off in Saturday's win over Luton, with Neil admitting after the game that the injuries "do not look good" for the pair.

Liam Roberts is set to replace Jensen in between the posts, while Connolly could start after he came off the bench for Scanlon in the first half of Saturday's victory.

Portsmouth possible starting lineup:

Schmid; Williams, Pack, Atkinson, Ogilvie; Hayden, Potts; Ritchie, Lang, Murphy; Bishop

Millwall possible starting lineup:

Roberts; Crama, Tanganga, Cooper, Bryan; Saville, De Norre; Watmore, Bangura-Williams, Connolly; Ivanovic

We say: Portsmouth 1-1 Millwall
