Plymouth confirm Wayne Rooney's replacement as club look to avoid relegation

The Pilgrims were searching for their successor to Wayne Rooney after they mutually agreed to part ways last month.

Muslic has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Home Park and will be in the stands for their FA Cup clash at Brentford on Saturday.

"Miron had a clear vision of how he wanted to take Argyle forward and showed a depth of tactical awareness that made it clear exactly how he wanted the team to set up and play," chairman Simon Hallett said.

"He comes with glowing reviews from his time at Cercle Brugge where he took a team from a lowly league position to European football which is no mean feat.

"I want to welcome him to the club and look forward to seeing him have an immediate impact on the team."

Muslic's last club was Cercle Brugge, first joining as an assistant in 2021 before a promotion to the main role a year later.

He guided them to a fourth-place finish in the Champions' play-offs after the regular season in 2023, their best final standing since 2008.

It saw them qualify for Europe and they are through to the UEFA Conference League last 16 this season.

However, 42-year-old Muslic left at the beginning of December and is now set for Championship football.

Rooney left Plymouth with them sitting bottom of the table and without a win during his last nine matches in charge.

The Manchester United legend only joined in May but was not able to see out the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

talkSPORT reported that former Huddersfield Town and Norwich City boss David Wagner was interviewed for the vacancy.

Former Pilgrims boss Steven Schumacher was also a candidate.

Plymouth are three points adrift of safety in the Championship and have won only four of their 25 matches so far.

Cardiff City and Hull City sit alongside them in the bottom three.
