Mohamed Salah casts further doubt on Liverpool future with contract update

The Egyptian is in the final six months of his Anfield contract, meaning he is on track to leave Liverpool for free in June, along with teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

He is now able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any club outside of England.

Bombshell comments after Liverpool's 3-0 win at Manchester United in September by Salah saw him say this would be his final season with the club.

In November, Salah then said he had 'not received any offer from the club' and therefore he was 'more out than in'.

After Liverpool's win over West Ham on December 29, Salah said no progress on negotiations have been made and it appears things are at a standstill once again.

Ahead of Liverpool's Anfield showdown with the Red Devils on Sunday, Salah told Sky Sports: "It's my last year in the club so you want to do something special for the city. That was the thing in my head.

When pressed if he genuinely believed it would be his last season at Liverpool, he said: "So far, yes. It's the last six months.

"There is no progress there. We are far away from any progress. So, we just need to wait and see."

Salah also admitted that every summer, before the season starts, he writes a list of his ambitions for the upcoming campaign. Last summer, he wrote about lifting the Premier League trophy.

"The first thing that was on the list was to win the Premier League with Liverpool," he said.

"It's probably because we didn't celebrate the one we won in the way we wanted," referencing their sole Premier League title win during the pandemic.

"We waited for that title for 30 years or so. So, to win it and it was the pandemic at that time, we didn't really have time to celebrate it in the right way. It's not a nice thing to do, so hopefully we can do it this year.

"The thing in my head is that if this is the last six months, what do you want to see in the future?' he said.

"Do you want to look back and say I was concerned or stressed about the contract? Or do you just want to say I had an unbelievable season? That's what is in my head.

"If I ever feel distraction, I just remind myself I want to look back and say I had an unbelievable season. That's what I want to do" he said.

Salah has so far netted 17 goals in the Premier League as well as 13 assists, recently becoming the first player to score and assist in eight different top-flight games within a season.

The Egypt forward has scored 231 goals and totalled 105 assists since he joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017.

Alexander-Arnold is another who is nearing the door at Liverpool amid interest from Real Madrid with the Reds already rebuffing advances from the Spanish giants to sign the right-back in January.

Fans are divided over letting him go, with some saying the Liverpool-born star would be hated for leaving his boyhood club.

Virgil van Dijk appears to be the most likely to stay, although neither player has signed a contract extension.
