'Might be his last week' - Postecoglou sack fears as Spurs undone by 'Moyesball'

talksport.com, 19 January 2025, 15:04
Ange Postecoglou might finally have reached end times at Tottenham after 45 minutes of embarrassment at Goodison Park.

Everton - the Premier League's second lowest scoring team - took just half an hour to go two goals up against Spurs in a 3-2 win, and they made it look easy.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring in the 13th minute but it was Iliman Ndiaye who made the visitors look as bad as they have under their Australian manager.

With a swift passing move, it was 2-0, and Arsenal great Perry Groves was left stunned on talkSPORT, particularly with David Moyes just arriving at Everton.

"That was Moyes ball, that goal started at the right back position, went into midfield, back out again, left back position, into Ndiaye, that was probably 12 passes which you don't associate with David Moyes do you," he began.

"Spurs aren't closing down properly, it's half hearted, I think, and I might be wrong, I think this might be Postecoglou's last week.

"Going up to Everton who couldn't hit a cow's backside with a banjo, they weren't exactly free flowing, for them to actually rip Spurs apart through that passing move means that the Spurs players aren't buying into Postecoglou and they aren't playing for him.

"I think he's going to be under pressure this week."

And it then got even worse for Tottenham as youngster Archie Gray turned the ball into his own net to make it 3-0 at the break.

talkSPORT host Adrian Durham added: "Is it Ange Postecoglou's last game?"

Groves then went on to say: "Postecoglou was looking completely shell-shocked, he was looking like he didn't have any answers.

"You could tell in his eyes he was thinking 'that team isn't playing for me, they're gone'.

The Australian coach made a change at the break, taking off Radu Dragusin and bringing on Richarlison against his old side.

It seemed to have some effect as the rot was stopped, and the Brazilian even got on the scoresheet after Dejan Kulusevski pulled one back.

It proved to be too little too late, though, and Spurs stay in the bottom six ahead of a trip to Leicester next up which is surely a must-win.

Much like in recent weeks, Postecoglou's mood wasn't exactly brilliant pre-match as he revealed the team's injury list has increased to 14 players.

"Brennan [Johnson] and Biss [Yves Bissouma] picked up knocks against Arsenal," he said. "Biss not too bad, Brennan probably a little bit more significant.

"Dominic [Solanke] tweaked his knee yesterday in training trying to take a shot and misses today and not sure of the extent of it.

"It's always a blow when you lose key players for any club. Obviously in the situation we're in that's further exemplified by the fact that we don't really have the depth to cover it at the moment, but that's okay.

"We've got 11 fit players and that's what you need to start a game."

Spurs entered the game in 15th in Postecoglou's second season with just one win in 12 league games.

They are, however, a goal up in their Carabao Cup semi-final tie with Liverpool, with Postecoglou previously expressing his confidence about ending the club's 17-year run without a trophy.
