Manchester City show the spirit of champions to beat Aston Villa and win the Premier League title

Just nine days after the 10-year anniversary of the famous Sergio Aguero goal that won the Manchester City the league title, lightning struck again at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola's side scored three goals in the space of five minutes to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Aston Villa and become this season's Premier League champions.

Villa took a surprise lead in the 37th minute with their first shot on goal, as Matty Cash headed past Ederson. Yet, with Liverpool drawing 1-1 against Wolves at the time, there was optimism that City would turn things around.

However, when Philippe Coutinho scored for Villa in the 69th minute, there was a state of shock around the Etihad. Just before the goal Guardiola had introduced Ilkay Gundogan in place of Bernardo Silva, and it was the German midfielder who really turned things around.

In the 76th minute Gundogan was able to get on the end of Raheem Sterling's floated cross to the back post, as he cut the deficit to one goal. Then, two minutes later, Oleksandr Zinchenko got past Cash and pulled the ball back to the edge of the box, where Rodri was waiting to simply guide his shot into the bottom corner.

The noise level inside the Etihad raised significantly at this point, and the stadium started shaking another three minutes later - in the 81st minute - when Gundogan turned in Kevin De Bruyne's low cross from close range. All three of City's substitutes - Zinchenko, Sterling and Gundogan - all had huge parts to play in the three goals.

City's Premier League dominance

City managed to see out the remainder of the game to win their fourth Premier League title in the last five years, all of which have come under the guidance of Guardiola. The 2021/22 Premier League season is in the books and City are the champions.
