Maguire suffers fresh injury blow ahead of Manchester derby as Ten Hag talks Haaland

The central defender played both of England's matches during the international break, playing 90 minutes against both Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

Despite playing the entirety of both matches, Maguire was said to have been struggling with a hamstring injury, leading Harry Kane to say 'he played another five or 10 minutes on almost one leg'.

However powering through has seemingly come at a cost, with the 29-year-old now ruled out of the clash with rivals Manchester City.

Speaking to the club's official website, Ten Hag said: "Harry Maguire is injured and I think, for the rest, we have some doubts, with Anthony Martial, but he was training all week with the group.

"So I am really happy with that situation, he's performing really well in training and makes a good impression.

"Marcus Rashford has returned to training, so I'm also happy with that."

Discussing Maguire, Ten Hag added: "First of all I have to coach him, I have to back him but I back him because I believe in him.

"In the period I work with him, pre-season, really good, training and games. Quality was really there.

"You see his career, almost 50 caps for England, with Leicester and Man United, what you see is high potential. Then it is about him.

"Player, manager, coaches, we all believe in him. I am convinced he will turn around."

Of course Manchester United face a tough task as they take on in-form striker Erling Haaland.

Having scored 14 goals in 10 games for City, Ten Hag's defence face a difficult challenge, but according to the Dutchman, that is down to Pep Guardiola's full team and not just the Norwegian attacker.

He said: "We don't play against Haaland we play against Man City. They have a good team and more than 11 players.

"We are convinced of our capabilities. If we act as a team in and out of possession, we can beat opponents.'
