List of Premier League and EFL games called off due to Covid this weekend

mirror.co.uk, 17 December 2021, 13:37
With a record 88,376 UK Covid-19 cases confirmed on Thursday, English football is beginning to suffer and a number of games have been called off as a result

The recent surge in coronavirus cases and the impact of the new Omicron variant have hit English football hard over the past week, as players and staff from a number of clubs have begun to test positive for Covid-19.

This has resulted in games quickly becoming postponed this weekend in both the Premier League and the English Football League (EFL), while there could still be more added to that list as we approach the weekend.

Manchester United recorded a high number of positive test results following their game at Norwich City on Saturday, and had their midweek fixture at Brentfordcancelled as a result, before their game against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend has now also suffered the same fate.

But they aren't the only team, as four more Premier League games have been cancelled as of Thursday, while five in the Championship will have to be rescheduled, too.

Here is all you need to know about which games have been called off ahead of this weekend, and which games are still on.

How would you feel about English football being played behind closed doors again? Let us know in the comments section below.

Premier League

Man United have now had two of their fixtures called off this week due to a high number of positive Covid-19 cases in their camp, as the Red Devils struggle to overcome their infection rates, with their trip to Brentford in and Saturday's fixture against Brighton now postponed.

United had just seven players available for selection ahead of this weekend.

Two other games were postponed in midweek, as Burnley vs Watford (Wednesday) and Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspur (Thursday) failed to go ahead.

Ahead of this weekend's set of fixtures, Southampton vs Brentford, Watford vs Crystal Palace and West Ham United vs Norwich have been cancelled on Saturday, while Everton vs Leicester will no longer be played on Sunday.

The following set of fixtures are still going ahead as things stand:

Aston Villa vs Burnley, 3pm (Saturday)

Leeds United vs Arsenal, 5:30pm (Saturday)

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Chelsea, 2pm (Sunday)

Newcastle United vs Manchester City, 2:15pm (Sunday)

Tottenham vs Liverpool, 4:30pm (Sunday)

Championship

The Championship has also taken a heavy hit with postponements for this weekend's round of fixtures, as a number of clubs have had a high volume of positive Covid-19 cases and are unable to fulfil their fixtures with enough players as a result.

Cardiff City vs Derby County, Coventry City vs Stoke City, Millwall vs Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers vs Swansea City and Reading vs Luton Town will all no longer go ahead on Saturday.

The following set of fixtures are still going ahead as things stand:

Barnsley vs West Bromwich Albion, 7:45pm (Friday)

Middlesbrough vs Bournemouth, 12:45pm (Saturday)

Blackburn Rovers vs Birmingham City, 3pm (Saturday)

Blackpool vs Peterborough United, 3pm (Saturday)

Bristol City vs Huddersfield Town, 3pm (Saturday)

Nottingham Forest vs Hull City, 3pm (Saturday)

Fulham vs Sheffield United, 7:45pm (Monday)

League 1 and League 2

Five games have already been called off in League One as Bolton Wanderers vs Wycombe Wanderers, Burton Albion vs Milton Keynes Dons, Gillingham vs Crewe Alexandra, Lincoln City vs Doncaster Rovers, AFC Wimbledon vs Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday vs Accrington Stanley will no longer go ahead on Saturday.

The following set of fixtures are still going ahead as things stand:

Cambridge United vs Rotherham United, 3pm (Saturday)

Ipswich Town vs Sunderland, 3pm (Saturday)

Morecambe vs Fleetwood Town, 3pm (Saturday)

Oxford United vs Wigan Athletic, 3pm (Saturday)

The following set of fixtures are still going ahead as things stand:

Rochdale vs Newport County, 3pm (Saturday)

Salford City vs Stevenage, 3pm (Saturday)

Scunthrope United vs Bristol Rovers, 3pm (Saturday)

Sutton United vs Harrogate Town, 3pm (Saturday)
