Italian giants Inter have confirmed midfielder Christian Eriksen has had his contract at the club terminated by mutual consent.
The Denmark midfielder has not played football since suffering a cardiac arrested during his nation's Euro 2020 match against Finland in June.
The former Tottenham player had an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) inserted following the incident, which saw him harrowingly collapse during the game in Copenhagen before receiving instant medical care.
Eriksen would have been unable to continue playing in Serie A unless he had the ICD -which can treat people with abnormal heart rhythms - removed and both the player and club accepted a continuation of his contract would not have been practical.
There has been no confirmation over whether the 29-year-old will continue his professional career.
A statement from the Serie A champions on Friday read: "FC Internazionale Milano announces that an agreement has been reached for the consensual termination of Christian Eriksen's contract.
"The Club and the entire Nerazzurri family embrace the player and wish him the best for his future.
"Even if today the paths of Inter and Christian separate, a strong and indissoluble bond will remain.
"The best moments, the goals and the victories, the embrace of the fans outside the San Siro in celebrating the Scudetto: everything will always remain fixed in the history of the Nerazzurri."
Eriksen has recently been training at Danish club Odense Boldklub, where he spent three years as an academy player.
A spokesperson for the Danish side confirmed: "Eriksen reached out to us and he is now training by himself.
"It's natural for him since he played here in his youth and lives around the corner. We are very happy to be able to provide training facilities for him."
Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind was fitted with an ICD in January 2020 and has continued to play for Ajax, where Eriksen started his professional career.
Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said after Eriksen's release from hospital last month: "This device (the ICD) is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.
"Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.
"He was gone. We did cardiac resuscitation, it was cardiac arrest. How close were we? I don't know. We got him back after one defib so that's quite fast. We don't have an explanation why it happened."
Eriksen joined Inter from Tottenham in January 2020 on a four-and-a-half year contract and helped them to win their first Serie A title in 11 seasons last time out.
The Denmark star featured 34 times in total under Antonio Conte at the Milanese club last season, where he started 17 matches in their successful Serie A campaign.
