Inside Nuno's struggle to survive at Spurs amid Kane problems and fan revolt

mirror.co.uk, 31 October 2021, 16:33

Four months into his reign, Nuno Espirito Santo is already facing doubts from all sides.

The Tottenham boss appears to have already lost the fans, sections of the dressing room have publicly voiced their concerns and now he is relying on Daniel Levy - a chairman not known for his patience - to hold his nerve.

Nuno was always seen as a last resort appointment - and the way the season has played out so far all the worst fears have been realised.

There can be no doubt that one of Nuno's first tasks was to solve the Harry Kane problem - and even that appears to be getting worse.

Kane's form has dropped to alarming levels which should not be much of a surprise because the England captain pushed to leave White Hart Lane in the summer.

But the comparisons in Premier League statistics to his previous seasons in terms of goals, shots, chances conversion and assists are all down dramatically.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Nuno be handed more time at Tottenham? Comment below

Nuno Espirito Santo is already under pressure in north London

Just one goal, one assist and a player who looks like he does not want to be there with a manager who simply cannot get his best player playing anywhere near the level required.

The fans barracked Nuno for substituting Lucas Moura in the dismal defeat to Manchester United with cries of "You don't know what you're doing."

And you do not get much more damning than that. It is always nigh-on impossible to turn things round when you have lost the fans - and they are making their voices heard.

Sadly for Nuno he is also bearing the brunt of their frustrations, a bunch of supporters who are fed-up with their chairman, the way they have gone backwards since Mauricio Pochettino left the club and the sharp decline since reaching the 2019 Champions League final.

The farcical summer search for a new manager after scaling Jose Mourinho mid-season was nothing short of embarrassing no matter how the club try to dress it up.

They went through the card - an emotional return for Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso - before eventually settling on Nuno.

It always felt wrong. Right from the start. In his first season in the Premier League at Wolves, Nuno did produce entertaining football, good players and performances.

But it ended badly with Wolves saying he was not the man to take them to the next level. And yet Tottenham backed him as the manager to get them back into the top four.

His style is defensive, a counter attacking manager who puts defence first. That has been highlighted by Tottenham not managing a single shot on target against Manchester United on Saturday.

For a club which prides itself on flair, winning with style and attacking prowess - To Dare Is To Do is the motto - that is unforgivable. And unworkable.

It is ten games into the league season, five wins and five draws. They started with three straight victories and Nuno getting Manager of the Month. So there must still be a little feeling from within that maybe, just maybe, he can still turn it around.

But the noises coming out of the dressing room are worrying. Harry Winks spoke out about his frustrations - and was left out in the cold.

Who is currently the best manager in the world? Take part in our survey below.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg spoke out after the United defeat, slamming the performance - and then backtracked by saying: "I had better not say too much." The players clearly have concerns about the manager.

Nuno is a man of few words - his programme notes often consist of just three pars - and he is not getting his message across to the fans, the players and the doubters. For a big, modern club, having a manager with no profile is a genuine issue. You quickly get forgotten.

His post-match comments are uninspiring - "we must improve" is not enough - to the point of concerning because they are hardly motivational.

This feels like the wrong man, the wrong fit and if Tottenham are bold then they will admit their mistake, try to right the wrongs and go down a different path.

The trouble is, they exhausted options in the summer, there is no obvious replacement - and that may be the biggest thing keeping Nuno in a job right now.
