'Great start to an interview' - Postecoglou gives spiky response after defeat

talksport.com, 19 January 2025, 17:49
Ange Postecoglou tried to hold it in after another humiliating Tottenham defeat, but in his eyes one reporter went over the mark.

The Australian had just seen his side concede three goals against the Premier League's second lowest-scoring side as Everton beat Spurs 3-2 at Goodison Park.

The result made it just one win and seven defeats in Spurs' last 11 league games, pushing Postecoglou perilously close to the exit door.

The former Celtic manager seemed intent on keeping his cool as his media duties began, but when the BBC's Match of the Day came knocking, it all went awry.

He was asked by the reporter: "Ange, familiar story, what are your assessments of that performance, please?"

Looking up from the ground, he looked livid and replied: "Familiar story?"

When he got the response: "Well, in terms of the defeat," things didn't get much better as he looked back to the ground.

"Yeah okay, great way to start an interview," Postecoglou commented, before analysing the match without eye contact.

"Yeah look, it was a tough result for us. Obviously in the first half we struggled to get control of the game," he said.

"I made some changes in the team that probably weren't helpful in the end. I had players struggling to come to terms with it.

"Everton then capitalised on it. In the second half, the players put in the right response and you know, credit to them but we fell short."

The reporter may have been left reeling, but others have had far more punishment from Postecoglou during his side's recent run of poor form.

One of those was talkSPORT's very own Sam Matterface, who was left with the 59-year-old shouting 'get off the fence' back at him after a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.

There were also some awkward scenes after a rare win in recent months when Spurs became just the second team to beat Liverpool this season.

Lucas Bergvall scored the winner in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, but he'd performed a crunching tackle on Kostas Tsimikas just moments before.

The referee played advantage as Liverpool maintained possession, but when the ball went up the other end of the pitch and was tucked away by Bergvall, his second yellow card of the game wasn't pulled back and given.

With Postecoglou ranting about numerous refereeing calls over the weeks, this one seemed pretty cut and dry, but he still clashed with a reporter post-match.

When asked if Bergvall was lucky to stay on the pitch, he sarcastically responded: "Yeah, great question! No, he wasn't!"
