'Gerrard has success coming' - says Young, who credit's Villa bosses 'fear factor'

Gerrard left Rangers in November 2021 after ending the club's ten-year Scottish Premiership title drought, returning to the Premier League where he was an icon as a player.

The Liverpool legend hasn't been such a revelation at Villa though, winning just 34 per cent of his games since returning to England.

Gerrard has come under pressure this season after taking just four points in six league games, but Young, who played with the midfielder for England, and against him with Manchester United, Villa and Watford, is sure he will have success.

Telling talkSPORT host and former Villa teammate Gabby Agbonlahor what makes Gerrard special, Young said: "The awe that he has about him, the aura.

"The presence he had as a player, obviously everybody had that way you think about Steven Gerrard as a player, he was unbelievable.

"He had that fear factor about him as well, and as a manager, he has even more of a fear factor, you don't want to step out of line.

"He's worked closely with Jurgen Klopp, he's even spoken to, as I say, 'The Boss' Sir Alex, and he's got that way to where you can laugh and joke with him, but you know when it's time to be serious.

"When you're out on the training pitch, when you're in games, he's a winner. He was a winner as a player, he's a winner as a manager.

"When I heard of the appointment I just wanted to work with him straight away and he shows that on the training pitch, he shows that on the touchline, he shows that throughout the games."

Despite Villa's underwhelming start to the season, their best performance came last time out when they took a point from champions Manchester City in a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

Young feels that match can act as a platform for the rest of the season, with his side receiving plaudits for their display against City which could have been a win if Philippe Coutinho's strike wasn't incorrectly ruled offside.

Young continued: "Everyone wants to buy into [Gerrard's] philosophy and I think that's what everyone is doing here. I think he's got success coming for him.

"Obviously last season was disappointing, but it's tough when you're coming through [the middle of] the season, you need to get a pre-season under your belt.

"The first six games haven't been what we've wanted them to be but when you come into work here, you want to put in the hard graft and get the benefits.

"I think we take the confidence that we built in the City game and go from there until the end of the season."
