Every Premier League club's historic record over hectic festive period

mirror.co.uk, 17 December 2021, 15:59
Seven of the 20 teams in this season's Premier League have had more success over the festive period than they do in general, but the current top three have had mixed fortunes

The December Premier League schedule often allows teams to make great strides at both ends of the table, with the matches coming thick and fast.

Things have been a little quieter this year with the spread of the Omicron variant forcing a number of postponements, but we have still seen some statement victories in the lead-up to Christmas.

Not every team adapts well to the increased workload, with just seven of the 20 teams currently in the Premier League boasting a higher win-rate over December and January than at other points in the season.

If you follow a Premier League side, you'll probably be looking ahead with bated breath ahead of a busy few weeks of football, but some might be more optimistic than others based on what has come before.

How do you expect your team to get on over the festive period? Let us know in the comments section

According to research from OLBG, the festive period brings more goals and fewer cards than the season-long average, while there are some clear beneficiaries in terms of points.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are the stand-out performers, with an uptick of almost 10% in their win rate over the festive period based on data from the entire Premier League era.

Only one of those wins came in December 2020, but it just so happens to feature the same opponents they're due to take on this weekend, with Pedro Neto's stoppage-time winner giving them the points at home to Chelsea.

While Wolves ' 9.89% is by far the highest of the current Premier League teams, former top flight sides Birmingham City (12.56% higher) and Wimbledon (12.22%) lead the way.

Norwich City's 5.12% uptick puts them second among the current crop, and might give them hope ahead of their upcoming matches.

The other members of the class of 2021-22 who have historically performed better at this time of year are Liverpool (4.32%), Tottenham Hotspur (2.92%), Burnley (1.71%), Manchester United (0.83%) and Watford (0.37%).

Liverpool's title rivals haven't been quite as successful at this time of year, with Chelsea (2.35% lower) and Manchester City (3.18%) seeing a drop-off in their win rates.

Both have picked up more cards over the period, though there's a difference of less than 1% in both cases, and have fewer goals per game while Liverpool's 0.21 increase in that particular metric is bettered by Norwich alone.

The biggest underperformers over the festive period, however, are Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

The Gunners' win rate has dipped by 4.52%, and Palace's by an even bigger 7.37%, with both of the London sides earning more cards and scoring fewer goals per game during the period in question.
