Conte 'considers Serie A raid' as Tottenham retain interest in £17m target

mirror.co.uk, 5 November 2021, 00:00

Tottenham have reportedly re-ignited their interest in Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, as Antonio Conte sets about bringing fresh faces to north London.

Conte took over the helm from Nuno Espirito Santo this week following a string of poor results for the ex-Wolves boss.

Spurs were rumoured to be interested in McKennie during the summer transfer window, but any move for the midfielder failed to materialise.

The former Schalke defensive midfielder has played an important role in Massimiliano Allegri's side this season, featuring 12 times and scoring two goals.

And according to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Juventus would be willing to listen to offers in the region of €20million (£17.1m) for the 23-year-old.

Weston McKennie is reportedly still be considered by Tottenham

The same report says that Conte and Spurs Managing Director of Football Fabio Paratici are both admirers of the United States international.

There is sure to be plenty of twists and turns in the race to sign McKennie between now and then.

However, Paratici has recently played down any speculation the club would spend out on new players in the January transfer window.

"Not at all," he said when asked whether he had spoken to Conte about new signings. "Because we trust a lot in our players. We are focused to be better, like a club, like a team.

"We haven't spoken about players, we have to be focused on our team and then we will see. I think the team is competitive, we trust in the players, we have very good players so we don't speak about (new) players now, it is not the right time. It is not the right time."

Meanwhile, Conte's new era as Spurs boss got off to a shaky start as he watched his side beat Vitesse Arnhem 3-2 in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Who should Conte make his first signing at Spurs? Let us know in the comments section.

Antonio Conte will be looking to sign his own players following his appointment

Conte reverted to his favoured 3-4-3 formation, which saw Sergio Reguillon as the only change from the team that were thumped 3-0 by Manchester United.

Spurs opened the scoring courtesy of Son Heung-min's effort inside 15 minutes, before Brazilian forward Lucas Moura doubled their lead eight minutes after.

An own goal from Vitesse defender Jacob Rasmussen gifted Spurs their third, until the Danish defender scored at the right end four minutes later to get his side back into the contest.

Slovakian midfielder got another for the visitors, but it wasn't to be this time around for the Dutch side, in a game which saw three red cards.

When asked about winning his first Spurs game, Conte said: "It was a crazy game. Usually I don't like this type of game - a crazy game means anything can happen.

"But at the same time I think we should win and we won. We were winning 3-0 then conceded two goals we can avoid. After a red card we were in trouble. To win while suffering is good for this team, these players."

The result leaves Spurs second in Group G with seven points, three behind leaders Rennes who have 10.

Conte's side will now switch their focus to the Premier League where they will face Everton on Sunday at Goodison Park.
