Ceferin: A Super League would be ruinous

A s controversy continues to surround the proposal of a European Super League, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has pitched in his criticism of the idea.

He joins LaLiga boss Javier Tebas following claims from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that a Super League would be the future of the game.

"This is the Florentino Perez 's dream for the last 30 years, before he was even in football," Ceferin told Slovenian website 24.ur in an interview.

"Two main candidates for the presidency of Barcelona publicly oppose the Super League, as well as Bayern Munich, Juventus and English clubs who have come out with the same idea.

"It's an idea, a wish for those who don't worry about the rest of football, who are only interested in today and not what will happen tomorrow.

"It would be ruinous for small teams and only make the richest clubs more powerful."

The Slovenian also discussed what it's been like to manage the impact of coronavirus on European football.

"We didn't sleep much, we had to work night and day, talking to governments, talking about health more than football," he explained.

"We managed to play more than 1,200 games during this time without any important incidents."

He also discussed the Champions League and how the final eight format will not return yet, though it could in the future.

"First we'll see how the vaccination process goes and how quickly it can be done, we're preparing for the next final to be like every year and that means with fans," he insisted.

"The format will remain the same until 2024, until then is when the rights have been sold for.

"We're talking about not playing at weekends because we want to keep the value of national leagues, but we are thinking about a slightly different system, more interesting, that includes absolutely everything.

"The Champions League will be as special as it is now."

Ceferin, elected in 2019, will face re-election in 2023.
