Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland: "I'm not surprised I scored against Schalke"

bundesliga.com, 16 May 2020, 19:15

It was business as usual for Erling Haaland, but a disheartening experience for Weston McKennie as Borussia Dortmund roared back from the seven-week coronavirus lockdown by putting four without reply past Schalke.

bundesliga.com rounds up the reaction to Saturday's behind-closed-doors Revierderby...

Borussia Dortmund

Erling Haaland (striker): "I'm not the same. I have not been playing games, as you say, for seven weeks. But I know I have been working hard this period and I'm not surprised [that I scored]."

Roman Bürki (goalkeeper): "We spoke in length about it beforehand, and said it's no different to how it was when we played as kids: no fans and just having fun. That's how it was for the team today. It was a great result for the fans watching on TV."

Lucien Favre (head coach): "A 4-0 win against Schalke is a good result. We played well as a team and defensively - that was key. It was a unique experience - no noise when you shoot, play a top pass or score. It's strange, we missed our fans, but the players concentrated on the task at hand."

Julian Brandt (midfielder): "You have to find a way to make the most of the situation and have fun. What better way to start than with a win? Obviously I'd prefer if conditions were normal, but it is what it is. It wasn't a perfect performance, but I'm happy after such a lengthy hiatus."

Michael Zorc (sporting director): "We're all very relieved after the game. We didn't know where we'd be at after such a long break. I only have positives to say about the team, they did a fantastic job. We deserved to win, and by such a high margin. It's hugely satisfying."

Schalke

Weston McKennie (midfielder): "They are a great team, so you can't make those mistakes against them. If you do, they'll punish you for it as they did today. So it was, like you said, a clear win - a deserved win."

David Wagner (head coach): "I think, at the end of the day, Dortmund were the better side. There is no doubt about it. Obviously, the goals which we conceded were far too easy and the timing was the worst timing ever as well because we conceded very shortly shortly before half-time, and the third shortly after half-time. Then the game was over. This team has a lot of potential, despite the result. I don't want to start questioning that just because of today. We have to dust ourselves down and move on."

Daniel Caligiuri (captain): "We had a plan, but didn't have a grip on the game in the first half. Dortmund's No.6s had too much space to influence the game. We started well enough into the second half, but when you go 3-0 down it's tough to come back from that psychologically."
