Azam FC defeated bottom-placed Singida United 7-0 to reclaim the second position on the Mainland Premier League log from Yanga SC.
Obrey Chirwa scored four goals, Selemani Nado hit a brace and David Natley scored an own goal to complete the route.
The 2014 champions needed about 90 seconds to get the opening goal. Joseph Mahundi got the better of his markers before finding Nado, who headed the ball past the goalkeeper.
The Chamazi-based side continued pushing for more goals with their visitors struggling to cope. On numerous occasions, Singida were saved by poor finishing by their opponents with the goalkeeper also doing his job effectively.
However, after a quarter of an hour, the hosts doubled the advantage much to the relief of their cheering fans. Zimbabwean Obrey Chirwa once again found Nado in a good position, and the attacker completed his brace.
David Natley turned the ball into his own net in the 41st minute owing to pressure from the hungry Azam side, who are desperate to finish the season on a high after being eliminated from the FA Cup by newly crowned league champions Simba SC.
Seconds prior to the half-break, Never Tigere managed to create a chance for Chirwa to score the fourth in favour of the hosts and ensure they go to the break with a healthy 4-0 lead.
The bottom-placed side looked lost and struggled to pick out passes which were fully capitalized by Azam.
The 26-year-old Zimbabwean needed just 10 minutes after the break to complete his brace, before scoring his third and team's sixth in the 56th minute.
Chirwa proved to be a hot knife in butter for the Singida United defence and it was not a surprise when he completed his haul in the 62nd minute.

The result took Azam to the second position with 62 points, 18 fewer than Wekundu wa Msimbazi, who were held to a goalless draw by Ndanda FC in another Mainland League match played on Sunday.
Singida's hopes of playing in the top tier next season are all but gone. With five rounds remaining, the highest tally they can reach is 30 which will not get them out of the danger zone.
On their part, Azam will hope to continue with a winning streak in the remaining games to finish second in the league.
Yanga SC, who are also keen on finishing in the second position, were held to a goalless draw by Biashara Mara United and are one point behind.
