Cohen played every minute of the victorious campaign on home soil and, in total, won 37 caps for his country.
The right-back was also a one-club man and spent his entire career at Fulham.
The club wrote on their website: "Everyone at Fulham Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest ever players - and gentlemen - George Cohen MBE."

Cohen made his England debut at right-back in a victory against Uruguay in May 1964. Just over two years later, he would be celebrating the game's greatest prize.
In 2000, he received an MBE along with four other members of the World Cup-winning XI who had yet to be honoured.
Manchester United legend George Best once described him as the best full-back he played against, while England manager Sir Alf Ramsay labelled him the country's greatest ever right-back.

Legendary football commentator John Motson paid tribute to Cohen on talkSPORT following the sad news of his death.
He told White and Jordan: "It certainly is [a sad moment] and another of the 1966 heroes that passes on. I was a great admirer of George as he had cancer many, many years ago and got over it.
"It was quite extraordinary at the time the recovery he made. I often saw him at Fulham where he hosted a lounge for corporate guests and he was always a very lively character and great personality.

"He and his wife, Daphne, were terrific host and hostess at Fulham home games.
"If anybody, other than Johnny Haynes, who already has a statue, deserves a statue at Fulham it would be George Cohen.
"He played for the club over 400 times and never looked like moving really. He was very much a one club man and his loyalty was very much to Fulham.
"I'm very, very sorry we shall not see him again. He was one of football's enduring personalities and gave so much pleasure to so many people, not just as a right-back in the 1966 team and in the Fulham team."
