Wolves v Liverpool LIVE: Reds bid to top Premier League against struggling hosts

talksport.com, 11 September 2023, 12:45
Liverpool will look to continue their unbeaten start to the new season when they face Wolves, live on talkSPORT this weekend.

The Reds are on a run of 15 Premier League games without a defeat - the longest unbeaten run in the division - despite their massive overhaul this summer.

Jurgen Klopp successfully managed to transform his midfield while keeping superstar Mohamed Salah away from the Saudi Pro League.

Liverpool sit third in the Premier League on ten points, only two behind champions Manchester City after four rounds of fixtures.

In contrast, that is double the point total the Merseysiders were on at the same stage last season.

They can now briefly go atop the Premier League for the first time since the 2021/22 season when they face struggling Wolves.

The hosts may look to start Hwang Hee-chan for the struggling Fabio Silva following his goal in the 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace last time out.

Liverpool are still without captain Virgil van Dijk due to suspension, while centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate is nursing a knock.

Trent Alexander-Arnold faces a late fitness test after he pulled out of England duty with a hamstring injury he sustained against Aston Villa.

But Thiago Alcantara could be in line to make his first appearance of the new campaign after recovering from a serious hip problem.

And Ryan Gravernberch may make his debut for Liverpool following his deadline day switch from Bayern Munich.

Wolves vs Liverpool: What has been said?

Liverpool have been told they are capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Former Reds star Jermaine Pennant told talkSPORT: "Minimum [expectation] is top four. The way we have started so far is ten times better than how Liverpool started last season.

"They look solid. Little bit worried about the defence but going forward, they look strong.

"The midfield is a really good midfield now. Young, energetic, [Dominik] Szoboszlai looks very good.

"Keeping Mo is not only going to be good for Liverpool but good for everything to do with Liverpool.

"The players will see Mo there, they know what he will give you. Goals, assists... and with him staying there, they should know be looking to challenge Manchester City like they have for the last five years, bar last season.

"At the moment, I'd say Liverpool are in a better place than Arsenal. I'll say in the games so far, they have played a lot better than Arsenal.

"Mikel Arteta is still tweaking... he is trying to fit people into the team.

Wolves vs Liverpool: Match facts

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League games (W10 D5), the longest ongoing run in the competition. It's their fifth separate run of 15+ games without defeat since Jürgen Klopp took charge in October 2015, with only Manchester City having more such runs in that time (7).

Wolves have won just two of their last 37 Premier League games when they've conceded at least one goal (D8 L27), winning 2-1 at Everton and Southampton last season. They're winless in their last 14 when failing to keep a clean sheet (D3 L11).

Liverpool won none of their six Saturday 12:30pm kick-offs in last season's Premier League (D3 L3), five of which were away from home (D2 L3). The Reds scored just three goals in those six matches despite attempting 83 shots (3.6% conversion rate), having 13 big chances, and accumulating 8.56 expected goals.

Wolves have scored just 12 goals in their last 23 league games against Liverpool, with 25% of those strikes coming in last season's 3-0 home win.

Liverpool have won 12 of their last 13 Premier League games against Wolves, with the exception being a 3-0 defeat in this exact fixture last season.

Wolves beat Liverpool 3-0 at Molineux last season, ending a run of six consecutive home league defeats against the Reds. They last won consecutive home games against them between February 1980 and August 1981 (a run of three).

Despite not scoring in any of his last five Premier League away fixtures, Mohamed Salah has registered six assists in his last four on the road. Indeed, only three players in the competition have assisted in five successive away games - Muzzy Izzet in December 2003, Cesc Fàbregas in January 2015 and Gerard Deulofeu in December 2015.

Three of Wolves' four Premier League goals this season have been assisted by Pedro Neto, only in 2020-21 has he provided more in a single campaign (6). Indeed, this campaign all three assists have been via crosses, more than any other player.

Three of Wolves' four Premier League goals so far this campaign have come via substitutes (Hwang Hee-Chan x2, and Sasa Kalajdzic). Indeed, since the start of last season, Wolves have scored the highest share of their Premier League goals from bench (29% - 10/35, min. 5 goals).

Only Everton (152) have attempted more presses in the Premier League than Liverpool this season (151), defined as a co-ordinated action by two or more defending players applying pressure at the same time, to one or more pressed players. After four games last season, the Reds only conducted 69, with only three sides performing fewer.
