Wolves send unseen footage to Howard Webb after Liverpool VAR controversy

Wolves have written to referees chief Howard Webb to demand an explanation for the VAR controversy at Liverpool.

Boss Julen Lopetegui is unhappy Wolves were denied victory in their 2-2 FA Cup draw at Anfield on Saturday. They were forced to settle for a replay due to a lack of camera angles for a VAR call when Toti Gomes scored in the second half.

Referee Andy Madeley upheld the offside call against Matheus Nunes but Wolves have sent the club's own footage to Webb - chief of the referees' body the PGMOL. Lopetegui said: "I have my opinion, we have sent our comments and we are waiting for an explanation."

Lopetegui has warned Wolves to expect a "much harder" tie tonight than their trip to Liverpool in the FA Cup. Wednesday's hosts Nottingham Forest were dumped out of the FA Cup 4-1 at Championship Blackpool at the weekend after making 11 changes.

But Wolves boss Lopetegui reckons they will be a much sterner test than Liverpool as the clubs are 90 minutes from a semi-final.

The Spaniard is set to go with his strongest side after making changes for Wanderers' 2-2 draw at Anfield on Saturday against Jurgen Klopp's men who are sixth in the Premier League.

Lopetegui assessed: "We have the possibility to fight for a semi-final. I am sure the match is going to be much harder than Liverpool for sure and very different.

"We have to be ready to have different answers. We have to go to the bus knowing it is going to be a hard task. They have a very good squad and it will be a very different team. I am sure they will have big energy and commitment.

"In the Premier League, each squad has very good players because it is the best league in the world. But we have the ability to overcome a good team and are excited about this possibility."

Wolves host Liverpool again on Tuesday in a third-round replay as one of four games in 12 days. But the League Cup in 1980 remains Wolves' most recent major silverware and Lopetegui would love to bring it back to Molineux.

He added: "We are aware of this. We are going to go with this aim. We are going to try with all our strength." Wednesday's game has no VAR and will go to penalties if level at 90 minutes. Lopetegui added: "We have confidence in how the referee works."
