Why Manchester United vs Brighton is not on TV with fans unable to watch clash

talksport.com, 17 January 2025, 16:30
Manchester United will look to put a second south coast team to the sword this weekend - but fans won't be able to watch the action.

United beat Southampton in midweek to secure their first Old Trafford win since December 1 and now will look to repeat the feat against Brighton.

The Red Devils were on the brink of a fourth successive Premier League home defeat to the bottom-of-the-table Saints.

However, Amad Diallo's inspired late hat-trick snapped the losing run to lift Ruben Amorim's side up to 12th.

Following recent positive displays against Liverpool and Arsenal, Man United now finally have some momentum under their new manager.

Amorim will know his team will need to raise their levels against Brighton, who enjoyed a far more comfortable 2-0 win over Ipswich.

The Seagulls will also be buoyed by their recent form over United - winning five of the last six Premier League games between the two.

Their latest encounter will be held in the early Sunday slot, but unusually, it won't be available to watch live for UK fans.

Why is Man United vs Brighton not on TV?

This Premier League match will not be shown live in the UK, having not been selected for TV coverage.

Sky Sports instead have chosen to screen David Moyes' second Everton game at home to under-fire Tottenham.

United's clash with Brighton was moved to the second weekend day due to both teams playing on Thursday.

Their respective opponents will also be in action Sunday, with Southampton facing Nottingham Forest in another untelevised showdown before Ipswich host Man City in the live 4:30pm slot.

Manchester United have lost five of their last six Premier League games against Brighton (W1), including both meetings at Old Trafford in that run. Only against Man City (twice) have they lost three in a row at home in the competition.

Brighton have won seven of their 15 Premier League meetings with Manchester United - the Seagulls have the highest win rate against the Red Devils of any side in the competition's history (47%).

None of the 15 Premier League meetings between Manchester United (8 wins) and Brighton (7) have been drawn - only Manchester United vs Wigan has been played more often without any draws in the competition's history (16).

Man United vs Brighton: Team news

The hosts can welcome back Diogo Dalot from suspension following his one-match ban for his red card against Arsenal.

The defender missed his first United game since December 2023 for the two cautions he received in the FA Cup win at the Emirates.

Leny Yoro looks the likeliest to drop out due to his struggles against Southampton, with Noussair Mazraoui reverting to the right.

The in-form Amad will be freed up to take a more advanced role behind the striker, with Joshua Zirkzee hoping to get the nod.

Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, and Jonny Evans are all expected to be unavailable to Amorim through injury.

Brighton will have former United striker Danny Welbeck back in their ranks, but Igor and Ferdi Kadioglu remain out.

Each of Manchester United's last 11 Premier League goals against Brighton have come in the second half of the match. They've not scored before half-time in any of their last eight meetings with the Seagulls, their joint-longest run without a first half goal against a side in the competition (also 8 vs Chelsea between 2013-2016).

This is the sixth time Brighton have faced Manchester United in the Premier League while above them in the league table, and the latest into a season they've done so. Having lost the first two such matches, the Seagulls have now won each of the last three.

Manchester United lost three of their four Sunday Premier League games under Erik ten Hag this season (D1) but have since lost just one of their seven following the Dutchman's departure (W3 D3).

Brighton have a higher win rate (38.9%) and average more goals per game (1.6) on Sundays than they do any other day of the week on which they've played more than 10 games in the Premier League.

There has been at least four goals scored in all four of Brighton's Premier League games on a Sunday this season (F8 A9). Their average of 4.3 goals-per-game in these games is the highest of any side on either Saturday or Sunday in the competition this term.

Having been involved in six goals in his first four Premier League appearances against Brighton (4 goals, 2 assists), Man Utd's Bruno Fernandes hasn't scored or assisted in any of his last six against the Seagulls.

Danny Welbeck and João Pedro scored Brighton's goals in their 2-1 victory against Manchester United earlier this season. The only Seagulls player to score home and away against the Red Devils in the same Premier League campaign is Pascal Groß in 2018-19.
