Why England are wearing their blue away kit in the Women's World Cup final

Of course, the Lionesses' main strip is white and they have enjoyed plenty of success in their iconic shirt throughout the tournament so far.

However, Sarina Wiegman's side wore blue during their semi-final win over Australia with some questioning why they had to wear that kit.

And the same questions will be asked for the historic final this weekend with no clash between England's white and Spain's red.

Why are England wearing their blue kit?

England are wearing their blue kit for the Women's World Cup final due to their shorts.

There may not be a clash between the two countries shirts but both have the same navy-coloured shorts.

Spain reportedly had the first choice over what kit they would wear and therefore chose their home strip with England in their away.

And FIFA has the final say on kits for each game, with the governing body happy to go ahead with the change.

This short colour clash wouldn't have happened any other year, however, the England players asked for navy-coloured shorts ahead of the tournament.

Originally they were white, but after members of the squad raised concerns over period leakage following the Euros, the colour was changed.

The navy shorts will now be a permanent feature in the Lionesses kit as they act as a beacon for change in women's sport.

So with the blue kit already seeing England through to the final, fans will be hoping that come Sunday afternoon, it has worked wonders again.

And if Millie Bright lifts the Women's World Cup trophy donning the blue strip, they will replicate the last time England won football's biggest prize when Bobby Moore held the title aloft in their away kit.
