Why Bayern and Kane are banned from wearing home kit in the Champions League

The German giants travel to Celtic for the first leg of their knockout round play-off tie on Wednesday night as they eye up a spot in the last-16.

Celtic don green and white on their iconic shirts whilst Bayern are known for wearing red, with a black aspect featuring this season.

However, whilst there isn't a kit clash between the two teams, only one home strip will be on display in the Champions League clash.

As reported by German outlet BILD via The Sun, UEFA have enforced a ban on Bayern that prevents them from wearing their red kit.

It is said that the darkened numbers on their jersey don't offer enough contrast for those watching.

Bayern can wear their red home kit in the Champions League, but only if they change the lettering and numbering to white.

Vincent Kompany's side have instead worn their black away kit and beige third strip during their matches in the competition this season.

This is expected to remain the case on Wednesday in their trip to Celtic Park as Bayern look to overcome their shortcomings in the league phase.

Their 12th place finish means they must compete in a two-legged play-off if they are to advance to the knockout stages.

Bayern won five of their eight matches, but lost the other three to Aston Villa, Barcelona and Feyenoord to leave them with 15 points.

Elimination from the competition entirely was a possibility at one point, but they salvaged vital wins to keep their European Cup hopes alive.

Harry Kane is their top scorer in the competition this season with six goals - four of which came in their 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb.

The England captain could increase his overall record of 35 strikes in the Champions League when Bayern face Celtic.

And should he get on the score sheet, it would be his first ever goal against a Scottish side.

A last-16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid awaits the winners of Bayern vs Celtic.

The two teams have met four times in the Champions League, with the latter failing to win any of their continental matchups.

They last faced each other during the group stage of the 2017/18 campaign, with Bayern winning 3-0 at the Allianz Arena and 2-1 in Glasgow.
