Who should Luis Enrique consider for his next Spain squad?

Spain will face reigning European Champions Italy on Wednesday, October 6, in the UEFA Nations League semi-final with the squad announced in the coming days.

There are many players on the fringe of the squad that will be hoping to get a call up for the game, especially with 2022 World Cup Qualifiers returning in November 2021. Here are some of those players looking to play their way to Luis Enrique's plans.

Sergio Canales

One of Real Betis' most important players, Sergio Canales, will be looking to see if he is included in Luis Enrique's squad following a strong start to the season. The player has seven appearances in the league and has featured for Spain in the Nations League before.

His performance of the season came against Granada in Betis' 2-1 win. The midfielder came off the bench and scored the winning goal with a great individual effort, a moment which showed his brilliance and how useful he can be for the Spanish national side if chosen.

Nacho Fernandez

Questions have often been asked of Real Madrid's versatile defender over the years, but less so this season. In an injury ridden back line for Los Blancos, Nacho has been ever-present and stakes a claim to be called up by Luis Enrique.

Arguably his two best performances of the season came against Inter in the Champions League and Villarreal in the league, where he helped guide the team to two clean sheets. He could offer the coach a reliable centre back option against Italy.

Rafa Mir

The new man for Sevilla has really started to perform. Rafa Mir started well in Andalusia but has improved his game in recent weeks. This international break may come too soon for Mir but if he is to carry on improving then he will likely be chosen this season.

His two standout performances have come in Sevilla's 3-1 win over Valencia and 2-0 win against Espanyol. In these two games he scored on both occasions and showed real threat in front of goal.

Yeremi Pino

Villarreal revelation Yeremi Pino will also be hoping that Luis Enrique will consider him in this squad announcement. For the U21s he has shown that he is more than competent at that level, scoring three goals and assisting twice in his last two games for the side.

This season for Villarreal he has been unstoppable at times, especially with his two assists against Atletico Madrid in their 2-2 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano. More recently, he starred against Elche with a goal and an assist. Will the coach take a risk on youth?

Hugo Guillamon

Another young player doing well is Valencia's Hugo Guillamon. Despite starting the season with a red card against Getafe, he has recovered well and has recaptured the form that saw him end last season well.

His best game of the season has come against Athletic Club, where he played the full game in the 1-1 draw and offered much needed reliability. At just 21 years he too will be breaking into the Spanish national team very soon, as he has done at U21 level.
